An article from opensource.com talks about the importance of Linux operating system and why it would be very beneficial to teach kids. Based on the article, Linux is being used in many supercomputer and big operation companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, international space stations, air traffic control systems, and cars companies such as Cadillac and Tesla. A survey by Stu Jarvis, a researcher in medical modeling and informatics in the UK, reports “in 2000, 97% of computing devices had Windows installed, but now with tablets and phones, etc., Windows is only on 20% of computing devices.”

The website provides four special Linux distributions for the kids to start learning Linux. There are Qimo, Sugar, Ubermix, and Edubuntu. It will help children start getting used to Linux which would help them operate other Linux distributions in the future. Linux offers variety of customization for the children to have fun. These distributions for kids are lightweight and can be put on older machines and some of them offer the option to be put on a bootable flash drive and be a portable operating system. Since operations in many companies these days use Linux, it is better for people to start getting used to Linux when they are younger.
