Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, in a log cabin with Nancy and Thomas Lincoln as his parents. During Abe’s childhood, his mother (Nancy) died. His father remarried a widow named Sally with three children. Abe moved several times when he was young. He lived in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. When Abe was 23, he was introduced to politics. He ran for the Illinois State Legislature in 1832 and he lost. For a couple of years, he worked odd jobs and was appointed to be postmaster. He tried again for Illinois State Legislature, and this time he won. Between sessions of Illinois State Legislature, he studied law and became a lawyer. In 1842, Abe married a woman named Mary Todd who was raised in luxury and was well educated. Besides serving in the state legislature, Abe was also elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Abe felt strongly against slavery.

He felt slavery would divide America. Many people liked his stand against slavery, and this helped him to become the 16th president of the United States. Right before Abe was elected president, he received a letter asking him to grow a beard. Abe was the first bearded president. The civil war broke out soon after Abe took office. Abe Lincoln gave his famous speech called the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. Soon after the speech, he was re-elected president, and five months later the civil war ended. He was glad the civil war was over, so Abe and Mary went to Ford’s Theater to watch a play. Abe was shot in the head while watching the play by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Abe died the next day.
