“Begin Again” by Taylor Swift to represent this unit’s theme; hope and despair. Hope is present in this song starting from the title “Begin Again,” this tells me that we all are faced with difficult situations and we’d all enjoy the sweet opportunity to undo the past events and start from scratch again. I enjoy this title because I can relate back to this title several times throughout my life and probably in the near future. Hope can be found in these “restarting, shaking off the past and moving on situations” by giving us another attempt at life again. A snippet from the lyrics in the first line “took a deep breath in the mirror,” immediately tells us that we can always feel our expectation to desire a new or certain thing to happen.

It gives us a time to breath and hope for a better day to come. Another quote from the song,” Walked in expecting you’d be late, but you got here early and you stand and wave, I walk to you, you pull my chair out and help me in, and you don’t know how nice that is” this shows us how little things that people may do for us are so important and appreciated. It’s also very sweet to have something normal to become something new. My favorite quote from the song “But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again,” represents God’s actions to allow us to try to be as happy and hopeful as we can be. He helps us to forget the past and look forward and live every moment we have to the fullest with the one who loves us back as much as we love them. One smile, one kind gesture and a new beginning can change our lives and can leave us enchanted. I can relate to this when you have that truly magical moment when you’re talking to the guy you think will be the last, and letting go of what has past as you speak. DESPAIR

Despair plays a few roles in this song, signifying comparison and depression. As displayed in the lyrics “He didn’t like it when I wore high heels, but I do” explains to me that some of the small things in life can throw you off course and make negative impressions. God has given us obstacles to solve, to encounter and to swerve to allow us to learn from our mistakes and fix what may happen in the future and to steer clear of unpleasant situations. The major quote that draws much attention to me is “I’ve been spending the last 8 months, Thinking all love ever does, Is break and burn and end” this signifies that love comes in many forms; touch, taste, smell, through listening and sight. If you experience it in harsh, heartbreaking ways, it changes the whole meaning of what you think love is.

Despair isn’t the way to go because all it does is send you down a dark tunnel of depression; this can lead to unwanted circumstances. Love isn’t at fault here; they’re the actions that are described to fit it. Crash and burn disappointment can sink your hopes and flush your dreams, but never ever forget that second chance you can give yourself to try again and make the worst situations the one’s to learn from. Go on, make the change and give yourself something to smile about! Hope and despair tie together because if we didn’t have the one, we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference and there wouldn’t be any solutions. We have to try to let go because “what’s past has past” to allow us to brush off the dust and begin again. Took a deep breath in the mirror

He didn’t like it when I wore high heels
But I do
Turn the lock and put my headphones on
He always said he didn’t get this song
But I do, I do

Walked in expecting you’d be late
But you got here early and you stand and wave
I walk to you
You pull my chair out and help me in
And you don’t know how nice that is
But I do

And you throw your head back laughing
Like a little kid
I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny cause
He never did
I’ve been spending the last 8 months
Thinking all love ever does
Is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again

You said you never met one girl who
Had as many James Taylor records as you
But I do
We tell stories and you don’t know why
I’m coming off a little shy
But I do

And you throw your head back laughing
Like a little kid
I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny cause
He never did
I’ve been spending the last 8 months
Thinking all love ever does
Is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again

And we walked down the block, to my car
And I almost brought him up
But you start to talk about the movies
That your family watches every single Christmas
And I want to talk about that
And for the first time
What’s past is past

And you throw your head back laughing
Like a little kid
I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny cause
He never did
I’ve been spending the last 8 months
Thinking all love ever does
Is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again

But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again
