Effect of Technology Essay First Draft
As technology has evolved over the years, so did the effect of technology on the world. Today’s technology has evolved from having phones without wireless connection and internet being something very scarce to an average household to now being available in almost anywhere in the world. As technology grows, we are into the Facebook and texting era, but we are losing sight on how to properly write a sentence because of how we communicate with today’s technology. In today’s world, as technology is advancing around us, some of the major effects that can be seen are medical technology advances, ease of communication with the growing technology, and the negative effect on our body.
As today’s technology is changing, some of the most major effects of it are superior advances in the medical field. One advance in the medical field is tissue engineering. It is being developed for use in regenerative medicine and soon to be in wider use for other treatments. Tissue engineering’s goal for the future is for the medicine to be able to stimulate other cells around the damage area of the body to get them to grow and produce living tissue (Sciencedaily). Another medical advancement is the monitoring systems and how hospitals can better track for problems and signs of an emergency. This can also help the surgeons decide how to stitch up a patient for best recovery time (Sciencedaily). As technology keeps progressing, another medical advancement is the way surgeons are doing operations. Today, for complex surgeries, surgeons now will get help from the use of a robot for accurate procedures; this will help with the size of the incision and keep the recovery time shorter than during standard surgery.
Next, as technology keeps growing around us, we are seeing an increase of computers, smart phones, and entertainment options that change the world with how we communicate, get informed, and ways to keep entertained; it’s becoming easier and more convenient to stay in touch with people regardless of where they may be located. As computers and any device to keep us entertained has evolved over the years, we now see them changing the way we interact and communicate for playing games and keeping entertained. Now, with all of the technology, there is no need for face to face interaction to play a game; we can simply get onto the internet and play a game with a complete stranger. Next, as phones have progressed from corded to wireless, now we have smart phones, and they are affecting the way we communicate with each other.
Being able to get into a video call and texting someone is now the normal, and there is no need to actually meet face to face to share information. This affects speech and ways we talk to each other by limiting conversations to shortened version in texting or using a whole new vocabulary while behind a screen. Lastly, another way technology is advancing is through news and entertainment. This media used to be newspaper or by word of mouth. As of today, technology has evolved, and we are getting our information from our phones to just turning on the TV in the morning, and it is affecting how we share information with each other. As social media sites evolve, we are getting to be able to access information on anyone instantly and spread the news a lot faster than in the past.
Another major effect of technology is that it gradually destroys our body and mind. Today, the ease of technology to do simple tasks and no need to move while watching a movie or a show or even order food from a restaurant and having it delivered is causing us to get lazy. We used to have to walk or drive to the nearest restaurant or video store and walk in and get what we want. Now, all we have to do is sit on the couch and by a few simple clicks or a call, we can get the food delivered right to our door. Next, as we get lazy, and as technology progresses, we are starting to see an increase in obesity rates because the simple tasks we used to do before are all now replaced by machines, making us simply click a button to check the weather instead of opening the door and looking outside. Jobs that require physical labor are now becoming easier with the use of mechanical tools and gas powered machines; this is cutting the amount of energy our body needs to consume, causing us to become more obese.
Moreover, in today’s world with so many ways to access information and communicate with others, technology is making us brainless because as Nicholas Carr states,” The internet is changing the way we read and how fast we read or think about the subject”(2008). This is causing us now to make a quicker physical connection but a lot less lasting cognitive connection with the vast amount of information we are given, and this is leading us to now not being able to comprehend books and other sources as well as we used to with our new thought process (Carr).
Overall, if technology keeps growing in the future, we should see some major changes in how we communicate with each other and a very advanced society with little to no effort to achieve the things we want. In some ways to prevent some of the effects of technology like getting lazy or obesity, we have to think about all the little things we have technology for and try to do these tasks without the help of that device. In the future, technology will boom, and we will see things we have never thought of before like major spikes in obesity with a more advanced civilization to come.
