The health care industry is an environment that is competitive and expensive. To be a patient receiving care the urgency is high and at a very critical point to trust a team of strangers with your care possibly even your life. On the other side of that coin, treating and interacting with patients is a part of the health care industry because providing care does not end with the physician. In the middle of these two different side of health care is where management steps in and takes over the middle ground. Big Changes in Health Care
Within the next 10 years I believe that the electronic medical record (EMR) systems companies will have to collaborate to create the ability for all the different records systems to talk to each other so that the EMR truly is available wherever you are receiving care across the nation. This is a vital function that is quickly getting out of control by competing companies who are making the software for EMR. When a patient is within a system like Kaiser and the EMR is available to any physician in the same system the information is right at hand.
However, when a Kaiser patient is traveling to a state that does not have a Kaiser facility and the patient needs care that patient’s records are not available in the treating facility because they are not in the same system or linked together so records can be shared. When the different health care systems have the ability to universally see the patient’s entire record they have a solid foundation on how to approach the patient’s care and have a better opportunity at a positive outcome. The providers won’t have to rely on the patient to repeat their medical history or on a family member to try and remember the patient’s history. This is a very lofty goal to reach in the next ten years but it is a goal that ultimately allows the patient to receive the best care possible. Role in Health Care
The role I plan to serve in the health care industry is to support the people who do the hard jobs on the front lines. The front desk, referrals, medical records, and the medical assistants work directly with the patients and they often receive angry exchanges from the patients. These roles need to be and feel supported to make decisions on the fly to help the patient and their fellow employees. I have found that these employees often have the best ideas for making changes to the operating procedures when there are changes that need to be made or adjusted. Supporting these key employees and giving them the voice they seldom have is how I see myself in health care. Although paths change, I enjoy the interactions I have with other employees. Evolving Skills in Health Care
I will continue my education to finish the Master of Business program so that I have a well-rounded knowledge of business and health care. I have a lot to learn about business because it is not something I have ever been interested in before but in order to advance in my career this education is the foundation I will need. I will also continue to pursue education through seminars and subscriptions to industry specific literature. The American College of Healthcare Executives encourages leadership to “find interesting articles in local newspapers, national magazines such as Newsweek and Time, and trade publications such as Healthcare Executive, Frontiers of Health Services Management, Journal of Healthcare Management, and Modern Healthcare (“American College of Healthcare Executives” 2014, p. 1).” However, I will continue to learn from the people around me because they are the best form of education. Learning directly from the people who are doing the job and creating the processes that go along with the job is the best way to gain knowledge. Perception of Health Care
I believe I have become more cynical over the years of being in health care and going through this course has not helped that very much. I often think to myself “Why am I in a customer service oriented job?” The entitlement people expect is mind blowing. However, I also think that my perception of health care is growing positively because of the different class and subjects that have been touched on throughout this course. I have a better understanding of the process it takes to get a law passed in our government, how to outcomes, and how to design a facility floor plan. Health care is changing quickly with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the amount of patients with the ability to get medical care. The amount of providers was not increased to help handle to large increase in patients. Patients are struggling to make appointments in a timely fashion because of the increased volume of calls on the call centers or front office staff. Patients are waiting longer periods of time to get an appointment because of the increased volume of patients. Doctors have the ability to not be enrolled as a provider in health care plans and that limits the availability of doctors that are able to treat patients on Medicare and Medicaid. Technology in the Future of Health Care
Technology will make huge strides in the level of care that is available to some patients. Surgical procedures will have better outcomes and treatments will be available to more people. However, technology drives the price of health care skyrocketing and those costs trickle down to the people paying their premiums and deductibles. Technology in health care is usually available to the patients who have the monetary ability to pay out-of-pocket to cover the additional expenses. Financial and Economic Issues Facing Health Care
In the next 10 years the financial issue that will affect health care is funding for Medicare and Medicaid programs. Medicaid.gov states, “Coverage for the newly eligible adults will be fully funded by the federal government for three years, beginning in 2014, phasing down to 90% by 2020 (Medicaid.gov n.d., p. 1).” The large amounts of Americans that have accessed the Medicaid programs available to them have overloaded the health care system. This is creating a strain on the health care system to be able to give care to these patients, many of them with chronic issues and disease processes that have been untreated for years. The cost to start caring for these patients and the increased costs on the facilities remain to be seen. The unknown costs that will have to written-off from the differences in accounts receivables between Medicare and Medicaid payments versus commercial insurance will impact facilities bottom lines that will directly affect costs.
Economically, health care is in the middle of the biggest changes in American history. The ACA has created the ability for individual states to use federal money to fund their Medicaid programs so that more Americans are able to have health insurance. The Congressional Budget Office estimates, “Spending for Social Security, Medicare (including offsetting receipts), Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and subsidies for health insurance purchased through exchanges will rise from 9.7 percent of GDP in 2014 to 11.7 percent in 2024 (Congressional Budget Office, 2014, p. 1).” Health care costs will continue to rise as more citizens access health care and the outcome of the ACA is heavily debated. Health care is a changing landscape of patient care and promoting health and wellness to keep more patients healthy and using health care more towards prevention of disease. I see my role in health care as supporting and giving a voice to the employees who work the daily processes of running a medical office. Continual education beyond the traditional classroom learning will help me expand my knowledge to help me advance in my own career path. The future is bright ahead.
