Explain possible priorities and responses when dealing with two particular incidents or emergencies in a health and social care setting.
When you are working within a health and social care setting the most important thing is to evacuate the people that is in your care out of the building first. When you are working in an organisation you should always familiarise yourself with where the fire exits, fire alarms and fire extinguishers are located. If you are working within a care setting with elderly residents and there is a fire it is important that you smash the fire alarms in order to make everyone else in the building aware that there is a fire.

As a career, your main priority would be protect the elderly people and get them to the nearest fire exit. If any of the fire exits are blocked for any reason and you are struggling to open them, you should always call the fire department and also close the door of the room that you are in put something along the gap at the bottom of the door so that the smoke doesn’t enter the room that you are in and stay low with a window open. If you are in a situations where you are stuck in a room by yourself you should always open in window and shout to let passer-by know the situation that you are in. A fire can have a very big Impact on people because they may lose valuables that mean a lot to them, they could lose their home or they could even hurt themselves. Flood,

Floods can be caused by many different things such as a natural disaster or a burst water pipe. When you are working within a health and social care setting a flood plan should be set in place at all times in case a flood was to occur. If a flood in caused by a natural disaster health and social care settings usually have a number of days to prepare themselves for this and staff should know exactly what to do. Because the nursery was closed this may not have an effect on the children but it may have an effect on the teachers and the local community. They may have to clean up some of the disaster’s that have happened and may have to spend money to sort out the damages that may have happened If an individual is working within a day care setting such as a nursery they would probably decide to close if it was caused by a natural disaster’s. If a flood ways to occur whilst the children were in the nursery. They will have to immediately evacuate the children. M3 – discuss health, safety and security concerns arising from a specific incidents Or emergency in health and social settings.

When you are working within a health and social care setting concerns may arise from specific incidents or emergencies. When you are working within a care residential home there are many concerns that may arise as I have discussed in my p4 if a fire was to occur. One of the main concerns that may arise if a fire was to take place within a care home would be if there was a security breech taking place, theft may occur because everyone would be concentrating on getting the residents of the care home. Another concern that may arise would be the danger of the residents and if they were to be put at harm. For example, service users, residents and staff getting burnt. If residents or staff suffer burns they could suffer from internal bleeding. Internal bleeding, caused by a rupture of an internal organ, such as a spleen or kidney, can result from a blow to the abdomen. You may not see any blood loss at all, although there may be signs of bruising.

You might not suspect internal bleeding from the history of the incident and the individual may go into shock. Reference: Beryl stretch 2010 health and social care book 1 level 3 page: 125 Another concern that could arise when there is a fire within a care home, residents being kept in smoke for a prolonged amount of time. If elderly people are kept in smoke for a very long time this could damage their lungs and they could struggle to breathe and this could seriously affect their health.

When you are working within a health and social care setting and a flood was to occur there may be concerns that may influences responses and priorities. One of the concerns that may arise when you are working in a nursery if there was a flood, facilities within a nursery may be damaged and they may have to be replaced. Another concern that may arise would be if the parents need to work and the nursery cannot be open because the children’s health and safety need to be put first in order to keep them safe. If you were to allow children to enter the nursery while it is wet there may be exposure to infection – there are many different opportunities where people that are in a health and social care setting where individuals may be put at risk because of infection. Infection can enter bodies in many different ways: Breathing in the bacteria (inhalation)

Swallowing
Through the breaks of the skin
Touching things
You should always make sure that you wash your hands so that infections like MRSA do not spread. Steps to washing your hands:
Wet hands and apply soap
Rub the palm of your hand and in-between your fingers
Interlock fingers and use your palms to rub the outside of your fingers Clasp each hand and rub using the rotation
Rub your finger tops over your hands
Rinse your hands
Dry hands thoroughly
D2 – justify responses to a particular incident or emergency in health and social care setting. Response – I have chosen this response because I think it is a very important factor to remember when a fire is taking place. Even though you first priority should be getting the residents out of the care home because they are the main priority, it is important to remember things like theft can occur. Theft is a criminal offence that should not occur especially at the most vulnerable times and you should always check to see if things have been stolen if you are able to.

They may have to clean up some of the disaster’s that have happened and may have to spend money to sort out the damages that may have happened. Response – I have decided to choose this response because I think it is the most important response when it comes to a flood occurring. When you are working within an organisation it is important that you know how to spend the money in the right places and if a natural disaster was to occur you may not be financially ready to deal with the damages that it has caused. When there are accidents and incidents within a health and social care setting such as a fire or flood you should always put these responses into thought.
