Intolerance is the failure to appreciate and respect the practices, opinions and beliefs of another group. Every man should periodically be compelled to listen to opinions which are infuriating to him. Talking about things that people cannot stand; it could be religion, differences between cultures or customs, or only different ways of thinking. There are some things that really bug us, but the problem is in the way people respond to these things. Intolerance is the principal cause of wars in the entire world. There are two effective ways to solve the intolerance problem: education and agreement. To be intolerant is to be a person who does not like when someone is different, and wants everybody to act in the same way. Intolerance has been the principal problem in the world since ancient history. All wars have been originated for problems such as religion, politics, race, etc. These problems are examples of intolerance. There are a lot of people that use violence when they get angry for something that they cannot tolerate.

Many of our enemies are the outcome of our intolerance. We cannot make justice, because we are intolerant to hearing the views which are different for ours. So, intolerance is a very bad quality. Teaching the harms caused by actions or behaviors produced by prejudice, has always been the most effective way to bring about tolerance. Teaching teamwork, unity, appropriate pride in the school, and appropriate social interactions will lead to actually living out tolerance for quicker than making tolerance mandatory, and teaching it as if it is the only acceptable way to get along. People learn to live with their differences, and get along well in the process. Tolerance is the only real test of civilization. Man in the 20th century believes he is more civilized than his ancestors. But is he also more tolerant than them? Unfortunately, the virtue of tolerance is not abundant in the world of today and the world is in dire need of it. At the most trivial sign of disagreement hot words are exchanged, almost immediately escalating into a fight and sometimes even murder.

Communities, social groups, racial groups and nations – at all levels, there appear to be an acute lack of tolerance. Trivial misunderstandings, even rumors, give rise to riots with the accompanying bloodshed and permanent scars on relationships; at the national level, there are civil war and border wars. So often a personal matter such as religion has been distorted to create hatred amongst people. If people learnt to tolerate one another’s views, perhaps such sad occurrences could be reduced if not totally removed from this world! Why has tolerance level come down? Or, indeed, has it come down at all? Human beings all through the ages have shown intolerance of views and beliefs and customs alien to their own.

Religious minorities have been suppressed and oppressed. Racial tension has grown due to intolerance. As long as human beings given in to envy, malice, jealousy and greed, tolerance will suffer. Family values, social values are all being eroded. The individual has assumed such importance that anything that militates against that individual’s own ideas is not tolerated. Intolerance is something that everyone should learn to deal with. The results of intolerance are always devastating. History is filled with many long-term cases of intolerance that continue even to this day. It is up to each of us to stop the intolerance. There is a book title that says it all: Peace Begins with Me.
