I.PROBLEM
What is the role of sunlight on the germination of Vigna radiata (Mung bean) seed?

II.TITLE
The role of sunlight on the germination of Vigna radiata seed.

III.RATIONALE
The germination of the seed is a physiological event. The light is one of the most important environmental factors for germination of seeds. The seeds of many species do not germinate in the dark. Vigna radiata seed or Mung bean seed as it commonly called will be used for the study since it can be prepared anywhere with minimum of equipment and preparation. The seed germinates rapidly also.

This study would be of great help for students like us who are into farming specifically those who are into planting crops so that we would know the importance of sunlight in the germination of seeds. The study could also be a good choice for teaching children about seed germination.

IV.MATERIALS

• 3 cups lightweight potting soil
•A sharp nail
•Small hammer or anything hard that can be used for pounding the nail
•A light source
•Cabinet or locker
•2 tin cans (from milk or canned goods) to be used as pots
•6 pieces
Vigna radiata seed of the same type (green with white line in the middle)
•Rubber band
•2 pieces clear plastic bags
•Camera or cell phone with camera for documentation
All the above materials are readily available at our homes except for the Vigna radiata seeds which the proponents will be asking from the school.

V.PROCEDURE

1.Get 6 pieces of Vigna radiate seeds all of the same type. 2.Poke a sharp nail to the bottom of the 2 tin cans which will serve as plant pots and make two to three small holes. 3.Fill the pot with the soil up to ¾ level of the can. Mark pots/tin cans as A and B. 4.Put the 3 seeds in pot A and another 3 seeds in pot B. Burry those seed at about 2cm. 5.Pour estimated water in every plant until soil feels moist. 6.Put a clear plastic bag over the pots and stretch a rubber band over the bag to hold it in place.

7.Place pot A near a window where there is sunlight.
8.Place pot B inside a cabinet or a locker.
9.After two days, check on the plants. Add moisture only if the potting soil is completely dry. Remove plastic bags after the seedlings emerge. 10.Measure length of plants in pot A and pot B. Document and record observations. 11.Observe plants on the third, fourth and fifth day. Carefully check the germination of the seeds, observe, communicate and collects data.

VI.IMPLICATION
When the seeds germinate and grow fast with sunlight, this will validate the importance of sunlight in planting seeds. This will benefit the Erdkinder community especially in O.P. planting.

VII.TIME TABLE
The study can be done in less than two weeks time. The actual experiment can be done in seven days. After which another three days will be allocated for the write up of the study output. Below is a table for our proposed schedule.

VIII.BUDGET
Soil, water, light source are free. Tin cans to be used as pots ,can be found at home. Vigna radiate seeds, nail and hammer can be source out at the school. Camera can be borrowed from family members of the proponents. The group shall be spending for the papers, ink for the printing and for the pictures. The proponents will be contributing One Hundred Pesos (Php 100.00) each for the expenses to be incurred for the study. The said budget for each student is reasonable enough for the parents to approve.
