Motivation plays a vast part in the NHS as the people are the NHS’s most important asset therefore staff need to make sure they are well motivated to ensure that jobs are done efficiently. Motivation is the desire to work that little bit harder. The NHS will try to improve motivating staff in order to achieve a desired goal and sustains certain goal directed behaviours. The NHS could offer improve motivation by their reward systems in order for workers to work harder.

Pay

Employee’s in the NHS such as nurses, administration staff and porters are more likely to be motivated by the pay because they won’t be earning as much as doctors and accountants. Therefore the NHS could give out additional pay such as bonus’s or by given their employees a pay rise each year they work for them. However some employees within the NHS may be working more for job satisfaction even if their job is not a well paid job such as a nurse.

Performance Related Pay

Another type of pay for employee’s within the NHS could receive performance related pay as it is a way of giving extra money to the employee’s on their performance over a certain period of three, six or twelve months. By doing this, the NHS staff about will maintain and improve the quality of patient care whilst managing workforce costs,

Pension Schemes

Anyone who starts working for the NHS automatically becomes a member of the NHS Pension Scheme.

Bonus’s

Giving more bonus’s to staff in the NHS could be another motivating factor even if it’s only a little increase in the amount they receive.

Relocation Fees

A relocation fee is money that is paid to an employee from the organisation to help them cover the costs of moving location as part of their job or getting a new job. I believe this would be a good idea for the NHS as some hospitals need more staff therefore if the NHS was to help the right qualified staff move, the other hospital will be able to have more patients.

Work environment

The NHS could improve motivating staff by making sure the NHS hospitals are safe and healthy places to work in. Furthermore some hospitals are a lot older than other hospitals therefore the NHS could make plans to improve the older hospitals. If staff are working in a not so nice working environment they are not going to be motivated to do the best of their ability.

Delivering great management and leadership

The NHS could also improve motivating staff by making sure managers are doing a good job motivating staff. If managers are not doing their job properly, how can staff be expected to do their job properly.

Making sure every role counts

Staff could be praised more for doing a good job therefore staff feel that they have done a good job. It’s not just about pay from some staff but to be praised for delivering such a good service. The NHS could make sure managers are told to praise staff for good work.

Training and Development

Another way of improving the NHS’s motivation in staff i believe is to offer more training programmes for staff therefore staff can climb up and become better qualified. If staff have the opportunity to work for higher paid jobs they are going to want to take that opportunity therefore their performance will improve.

From my research, the NHS was said to have a missing set of values and the key to the NHS values are the four pledges to staff – to provide them with rewarding jobs, training and development, health and wellbeing – and engagement and involvement in decisions that affect them and the services they provide. They set up the NHS Constitution because they believed that staff are fulfilled by their jobs and want to improve patient care but feel the system at times works against them providing the high quality care they aspire to give.

The NHS have initiated a renewed focus on leadership in the NHS to increase leadership capacity and capability to ensure staff are freed up to innovate, to work in the interest of their patients at all times, and no longer feel hampered by the system.

Furthermore they have established the Boorman review to analyse the health and wellbeing of NHS staff and recommend improvements and we are also developing the staff survey to ensure we get feedback on staff engagement levels.

The NHS are also doing more research and through the constitution and the NHS values that bind all health service staff together and the renewed focus on outstanding leadership throughout the NHS, they will achieve higher levels of staff engagement, inspire innovation, increase productivity and improve care.

Overall there are a lot of ways in which the NHS can improve motivation techniques with their staff. It can include ways of pay or satisfactory to the employee methods.
