A Woman’s Place Is in the Home

We are now living in the 21st century, the idea of whether or not a woman should work is very different from the traditional culture. It is a very common scene for women to go to work in Hong Kong now. To a larger extend, I believe a woman’s place is not just in the home.

Traditional thinking said that women should stay at home, tidy up the house, take care of the children and cook for the family. This is a woman’s responsibility. People judge that only those housewives are good women or good mothers since they do many things to keep the home warm. However, have people ever thought from the women’s side? Do women really want to stay at home? Do you know how boring it is to stay at home for the whole day?

Unlike before, people consider only male should go to school and female should stay at home to manage the household. Nowadays, everyone including female have the same chances to study as male. Women and men can have the same qualifications and academic background. Also, since men and women now have the equal right in the society, women don’t have to depend on men all the time as they can earn their own living by going to work. Isn’t it justified for women to go to work?

In Hong Kong, a numerous number of men get a job in order to earn the money for the family’s living. Thus, women go to work as they hope to help their husbands in sharing the responsibility of supporting the families. I am sure their husbands will appreciate this. Besides, since both parents are working, so they may be able to provide a better living standard for their children. They may have more money to let their children to grow up healthily and happily. Besides, the families can even go to trip during holidays.

Some women work for their dreams instead of for money, may be they want to be a doctor, lawyer, designer or artist since their childhood. So why should they give up their dreams because of the traditional thinking that women have to stay at home? They have the right to choose what kind of life they want.

Women also have many talents in many ways. This effort and contribution to the society is as important as male, such as nurses, teachers, accountants and etc. Sometimes women can even work better than men. So women should work after they have finished school and not to waste their ability to earn money or contribution to the society.

There are lots of successful working women in Hong Kong. For instance, Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai, she was the president of the Legislative Council. Few years ago, she gave her kidney to her daughter in order to save her daughter’s life. This show a working woman can also be a wonderful mother. In addition, Mrs. Chan Fang On Sang, one of those successful women in Hong Kong, was the first woman and the first Chinese to hold the second-highest governmental position in Hong Kong. Besides, Kung Yu Sum, she was the richest lady in Asia and her name is on the Forbes. She successfully developed her husband’s business and earned so many assets.

People may argue that working women cannot spend enough time with their children, but it is not a rare scene that most families hire a maid to help them take care of their children and tidy up the house nowadays. Hence, women do not have to stay at home all the time to look after the children and manage the household. Women can go to work without worrying about their children. If women have a good time management, they can make a balance between work and family time.

Furthermore, those working women are usually highly educated. They may have better abilities to teach their children about their children’s school works and studies than those housewives. Those working women may have a broader view towards life and more experienced in handling all kinds of troubles or problems.

Summarizing the above, no one can deny that nowadays women are well educated and have equal right as men in the society. We shouldn’t discriminate women that they should not work. This is not fair to them. Besides, since it is easily to find a maid in Hong Kong, it is reasonable for women to go to work without the burden of taking care of the families. Moreover, the most important is that women have the right to choose what kind of life they want and they should not waste their talents.
