Introduction

There are three main types of joints. They are all important for the body to perform its tasks during life. They are.

* Fibrous

* Cartilaginous

* Synovial

These joints sustain movement and shape of the human body. Some of the joints in the human body have created a form of protection without movement. All of the bones in a body are strong and contain what is called bone marrow. They are too small to do so and don’t need any. Bone marrow is the substance that keeps the bones alive and grows and also in some unfortunate cases heals after an accident.

Fibrous joints

Sutures are situated in the cranium (Skull). Then there is also syndemosis which is mainly in the tibular and fibular. And finally there is Gomphosis the, which is in the teeth.

Sutures are situated in the cranium, which is the skull. They are connected by tissue, which after your cranium reaches a certain size they will start fusing together. When a person is born their cranium is not attached the bones overlap so that your brain is allowed to grow and it relieves pressure off the brain.

Syndesmosis joint is located in the tibular and fibular.

Gomphosis joint are only found in one place in the body, which is in your teeth. Gomphosis is the joint is what connects your teeth to your gums, which is why it is called a Gomphosis joint. It is the connection between the teeth and the gums by using the roots.

Cartilaginous joints

There are two types of cartilaginous joints, Primary and Secondary.

Cartilaginous Primary joint is only found in the first rib and end of long bones in the body. These joint allow some movement with no joint cavity. Slight movement is posible because the pads of cartalage compress. They also act as shock absorbers.

Cartilaginous Secondary joint is unlike the Primary it can move but for a small movement e.g. first rib up and down n the slightest form. It is placed in the ribs all of them bar the first and in the vertebrae which are flexible but only to an extent with the ribs just in and out with a little up and down.

Synovial joints

Synovial joints are the most common joints in the body. There are many places in the body, which they are found. A Synovial joint is the most important joint in the body to most sports as they contain quick and sudden movements. They Synovial joint works as a form of a shock absorber. Using the fluid in the joint, which is called Synovial fluid, does this. With out the fluid the joint would more or less be pointless. The joint is a hinge joint it allows movement only in 2 directions if it is not broken or unconnected in the joint. It can only move forwards and backwards like a hinge on a door. This joint is located in 2 main areas, which is your knee and your elbow. If there were another joint here it would not be so affective as the Synovial joint. They also have Synovial membrane to join the bones together and there is also articular cartilage, Synovial cavity and finally fibrous capsule. With out these important factors the Synovial joint wouldn’t be able to do what it does so well.

Knee. The knee is most probable the most important of all of them as the Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber.

If your were to fall and you had no Synovial fluid there would be nothing to absorb the shock of the impact there for there would be a good chance the your bones would just brake. Your Synovial fluid is a shock absorber, which is what lets you walk with out being in pain if you had no Synovial fluid it would hard to walk and any sport would be hard to do.

There are also many other joints that are Synovial, which also contain Synovial fluid. Another famous joint is the ball and socket joint that are found in your shoulder and your hip. Here is a picture of a ball and socket joint in the shoulder.

Also there are some other types of joints that are found in the human body which are:

* Gliding- found in the vertebrae.

Because one side is over the other gliding joint gives the body its flexibility so we are able to move in many directions and have structure. It is useful when you do gymnastics and you bend over to do hand stands

* Hinge- found in the elbow and knee.

The hinge joint can only move in 1 direction back and forward. It is used inmost movements an example is use in rugby when you kick the ball because you extend your knee forcibly and is normally vital to win a game.

* Condyloid- found in the wrist.

The condyloid joint is only situated in the wrist of a human it can move in all directions but not like the ball and socket. It is use in all rackets sports but mainly in badminton.

* Pivot- found in the axis of the neck.

The pivot joint is in the neck of a human. It holds the neck in place and it allows about 180o of rotation.

* Saddle- found in the thumb.

* Ball and socket- found in the hip

The ball and socket joint is the most known joint in the body as it is the only one that is capable of rotating 360o. this is very important in games like tennis as your shoulder is under a lot of pressure with the smash.

All of these joint are important for the human body to move and to sustain its shape. With out the bones in our bodies the human body would only be a stain on the floor almost entirely made of water with no strong substance to sustain shape or movement and we wouldn’t have any protection which our bones provide.
