Aristotelian idea of God Essay Sample

This image produced in 1544 shows emerging’s of the Judeo-Christians and Aristotelian’s traditions. Aristotle was very interested in the idea of motion and said

“The world is in a constant state of motion and change”.

An example of how the world is changing is the growth of trees and plants. Aristotle believed in a prime mover, which is the being which creates change in the world. This is the same as the Judeo- Christian idea of a creator God, but there are important differences. Aristotle believed something must exist that creates the changes because the world is in a constant state of change. The Judeo- Christian idea of God is similar to the Prime Mover as their God is responsible for creating the world. This is shown in the Bible when in the creation story it says,

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth”.

Although there are some similarities between Aristotelian and the Judeo- Christian idea of God, there are some fundamental differences in the way they are involved in the human’s lives and what this means for people who believe in them. Their beliefs rule people who believe in a Judeo- Christian God and live their lives according to what they think is right and wrong in Gods view.

Although, the Aristotelian theory doesn’t tell humans how to live our lives, and only how the universe came to be. This image is the Judeo- Christianity theory is portrayed as God is seen at the top of the image in the middle which is seen as he is watching over his creation. We can assume that it is Jesus because God has a cross mark on his crown.

The idea of the five elements in this image is a hierarchy of elements: Fire, Earth, Water and Air. The details that convey this idea is the grass flying in a different direction, the lines near the clouds which looks like it is windy.

The fire is right above the clouds, and the flying birds. The water is all the way below the image, and the Earth is seen as a whole. Fire looks like the divider between heaven and Earth. The fifth element according to Aristotle tradition is quintessence; the celestial bodies including the moon, sun and the stars represent that in the image.

Another theory that can be put here is that the Earth is flat. During the 15th century, it was believed that the earth was flat by many people. When we look at the cosmological image, it can be seen that Munster is portraying all of the things that exist in the world.

Even though Aristotle proved that the earth was spherical on empirical grounds, this is just a personal observation which was made.

The value in the picture is that God is higher than everything and in the centre of everything. He is the highlight of the image as there are clouds and the other celestial bodies near him.

If one gives this image a closer look, it can be seen that it looks similar to a human eye. It’s what we see.

The Devils look suffocated as compared to the angels, looks like they don’t have enough space to fit in, as we can see on the bottom corners. On the other hand, even though the Angels have wings, they look comfortable in the small section on the top edges.
