Authoritarian vs Democratic Essay Sample

The two countries The United States of America and North Korea are vastly different based off of how they are run and the types of government that are used within them. Because of the ways they are run, the citizens of both countries have greatly different rights and freedoms, and services that are provided for the people by the government. In general, Democratic countries to most people seem to be better places to live than Authoritarian countries.

The types of government used in both countries are so different to the point the one is a complete dictatorship and the other is one of the most free countries on the planet. North Korea uses a type of dictatorship known as a Totalitarian Family Dictatorship. This type of government can also be known as a Monarchy. In a Monarchy, the person in power will always be in the same bloodline as the leader before them. The current President of North Korea is Kim Yong-Nam, who is the son of the previous Dictator Kim Jong-Il. Kim Yong-Nam has generally complete control over all of the happenings in North Korea. North Korea has the official title of “The Democratic Republic of North Korea” but this name isn’t entirely true because there is only one party in the government that the people can vote for, quite similar to the Chinese government. In North Korea, if people try to form another party to run against the Kim family, they are arrested (www.123independenceday.com). On the other hand, the USA uses a Constitution-based Federal Republic. In the republic, citizens vote for deputies, otherwise known as representatives who vote on Legislation on the people’s behalf. These methods are both affective in their own ways, but in terms of the happiness of people, USA prevails because they give the option the citizens to vote for who they want in power and not be forced to have a pre-decided dictator.

The human rights of the United States of America and North Korea vary on an extreme level. In North Korea, there are no racial rights differences any more, but there used to be, much the same as the USA. However, women in North Korea must follow more rules than men. A few restrictions for women are they are not permitted to ride bikes, and they must always wear skirts in public places. No such rules apply to women in the USA. In terms of sexual preference, gay marriage is currently allowed in the USA, but is being disputed among political figures if gay marriage should be banned. North Korea has zero tolerance for homosexuality and in some extreme cases, homosexuals are executed. North Korea is also known for performing public executions to strike fear into the people to reduce the likeliness of crimes being committed. The USA is by far a more free country than North Korea mostly because the difference in the rights that the governments give their people.

Healthcare provided for the people of North Korea and the United States of America are both sufficient for their needs. Healthcare in North Korea is free because of the communist economy. Because of this, it would make sense for hospitals to be run by the government because the people are already so heavily taxed that most services are already provided for “free”. However, healthcare in the USA must be paid for by the citizens as they need it. For lower income families, they can qualify for free healthcare which is funded by the government. The life expectancy in North Korea is 68.5 years on average, while the USA’s is 78.2 years, showing that the standard of living in America is much better than that of North Korea. The birthrates in the USA are much higher than in North Korea, even though birthrates have been plummeting since the 1990’s. A point against the USA is that one third of their entire population are overweight or obese, while in NK obesity rates are minimal. On top of this, North Korea has 3.3 doctors per 1000 people while the USA only has 2.3 per 1000 people (Stats from Google Public Data and Nation Master). Overall, these results show that the United States of America has healthier people because of the 10 year difference in life expectancy. The USA does a better job of keeping its citizens well based on its population.

Overall, it is prevalent that the United States of America is a significantly more free country than North Korea. This is mainly because of the way the different governments choose to run their countries. This can prove that in general, Democratic societies are more pleasant places than the societies of Authoritarian countries. “World Statistics, Country Comparisons.” NationMaster.com. From what I've learned about apartheid and from what I've read in the novel I have learned how this system has been able to survive as long as it did. John Locke 's labour theory of property and government has won attention from a staggering range of interpreters. Some analysts have hailed the theory as the greatest achievement of Locke's political writing, whereas others have scorned it as critically misdirected and shallow. For numerous analysts both friendly and hostile, the labour theory functions as the core of Lockean individualism, but for others the theory serves...

The first thing that needs to be said is that I’ve chosen this topic as it seems very relevant and interesting to me. Before the 1820s, many democratic ideals were not present. African Americans and women were still seen as inferior to white men; education wasn’t a requirement nor was it available to many individuals; alcohol was able to be consumed as when pleased and excessively; and the mentally unhealthy were treated as criminals. Government was run under a federalist system stating that states and provinces share power...
