The beliefs Christians hold about their responsibilities for those at the beginning and end of their lives Essay Sample

There are many people living today who do not value the gift of life from God. Many people who are disabled or ill may feel like this as they see other people enjoying themselves and doing things/activities they may not be capable of doing. Many people believe their life is cursed or God is ignoring them when things in their life don’t go like they want them to. This is shown in the film “Bruce almighty”, where an average working class man feels god is ignoring him or dislikes him. He blames his unsuccessful career on God.

However, many people and even in the many minds of people who don’t appreciate life, also believe in the importance of preserving life. Some Christians believe life is precious or sacred. This is called the sanctity of life. The word sanctity means purity or holiness. When it is used to describe life, it expresses the idea of a preciousness worth of the highest respect. In the book of genesis, God expresses his view of his gift of life to us. It is written that ‘everyone is made in god’s image’ . This is God reminding us that he was the creator of all life and that us human beings were made in his image.

Christians believe that life is a precious gift from god and that each person is in god’s family. They believe he watches over us when in the best and worst times, like a guidance. Each and everyone of us is well know to him. To them, the purpose of life is to love and serve god, and to treat everyone with respect and to treat them as how you treat yourself “love your neighbour as yourself”. (mark 12:31). Jesus showed and teaches us through his life that everyone should be valued. He showed us, no-one is higher or lower up than anyone else, everyone is equal.

Christians believe that the understanding of sanctity of life should help them to go against abortion and euthanasia. “while we are alive, we are living for the lord, and when we die, we die to the lord: and so, alive or dead, we belong to the lord”. this biblical quote suggests to us that whatever we do in life, it will be for the lord. We live, die, and belong to the lord. We should follow in Jesus footsteps and do gods work. “god alone is the lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstances claim for himself the right directly to destroy. nnocent human being”. To take someone else’s life away is a sin and is against god’s wishes.

No body has the right or power to kill someone over god. The sixth of the tenth commandments says ” do not commit murder” “Jesus heals a paralysed man” is a story from the bible that shows us how life is sacred to us. Jesus was heading towards his home town of Capernaum. The news spread so quickly, that there was no space on the streets, even outside peoples front doors. Four men tried to carry a paralysed man to Jesus but there was no space.

So they cut a hole in the ceiling, just above where Jesus was standing. They then lowered him down to Jesus. Jesus realised how much faith the man had and said “my son, your sins are forgiven”. Some of the teachers of law were present and they started shouting blasphemy! Jesus then explained his view and told the man he healed to go home. This shows us Jesus believes all human beings are the same and should be treated the same. He treated the paralysed man like everybody else. Jesus didn’t just treat the rich, like most people would do.

He treated someone who was paralysed. He didn’t mind to associate himself with people suffering from diseases or illnesses or whether they were outcasts. He made time for people others ignored to help them feel the same as everyone else. This is how Christians living today should act. The hospice movement is a modern day example of people following in Jesus’ footsteps. Hospice accepts death as a natural part of life, and recognizes that time at the end of life can be joyful, peaceful and filled with reunion and reconciliation.

It honours patients as intervals and understands that the patient’s loved ones need emotional care and support. It has followed Jesus as it shows respect for humans and treats people all the same. The first hospice was founded by Dame cicely Saunders in London. This hospice is called St. Christopher’s hospice. The first hospice in America, the Connecticut hospice, opened in 1974. The hospice movement has continued to grow. There are for-profits as well as non-profit hospice programs. In 1993, there were 1,288 hospices in America. By 1999, there were more than 3,000.

This alone shows the demand and needs for hospices. Anointing of the sick is all a modern example of people following Jesus. It is the pastoral care of the sick. They are anointed with oil as a sign of healing and prayers are said. Cases when this may happen are, for example, before a patient has an operation; for someone who has just been diagnosed with a serious illness; an elderly person; for a baby or child or for someone unwell at home. A person may receive it more than once. Many churches have a special anointing service twice a year during Advent and Lent.

For some Christians the quality of life comes into play. Some Christians would argue that the quality of a persons life often needs to be considered at the beginning or end of their life. That is life should not be preserved at any cost. Keeping the person alive should be the most important thing. The quality of life is equally important as the life itself and the church values all life. Many Christians believe that people who commit abortion and euthanasia may suffer from mental illnesses, unhappiness and that they believe there is no point of them living as they will die anyways. It is the easy way out of life.
