Introduction

Carinderia is a local eatery selling and serving affordable viands for the masses. It is also known as “turo-turo” wherein customers literally point what they want to eat. Carinderia is most likely derived from the word “cari” or “kari”, a Tamil word for sauce, or a saucy accompaniment for rice. Some theories attribute connection to the large number of breakaway soldiers from the invading British army, mostly East Indian Bengalis or Tamils, ended up settling in Taytay and Cainta, major tourist routes at the time.

Filipinos are known for their love for food. That is why a lot of people nowadays enter the food business. A great spot to establish a carinderia is near a school wherein their potential customers will be students who have a limited budget. And because they only have a limited budget, they would always prefer a place that offers a variety of viands in a cheap price. That is the reason why carinderias are a big hit especially if they are near the said establishment.

They must not only offer good products at a reasonable price, but they should also give good service for them to gain loyal customers. This is one kind of business that would not require a big start-up capital, and if managed correctly, this can become something big.

Background of the Study

Statement of the Problem

This research proposal will give information about the factors affecting the demand of students, especially from Technological Institute of the Philippines, for the Carinderia industry. Upon our analysis with regard to this, we formulated important questions that will help us solve the problem such as:

1. How much is the budget of an average student for food, particularly for lunch or heavy meals? 2. What strategies can a carinderia use to gain customers? 3. Do the customers get satisfied when they eat in a carinderia?

Significance of the Study

This research proposal about the effect of tuition hike will be significant most especially to the students of TIP and to their parents, and also to the carinderia operators or owners.

To Parents – This paper will give them assurance that their children can eat regularly and properly since there are a lot of Carinderias outside and near the school that offer different viands at a cheap cost.

To Students – This paper will give them information that it is much affordable to eat in a carinderia than in other places like Jollibee and McDo. Also, carinderias can offer a lot of choices for viands that can surely satisfy them.

To Carinderia Owners – This study can help the owners or operators to improve their knowledge in running their business and how they can meet the demand of the students for their products and service. Scope and Limitation of the Study

This research is focused on providing information, statistics and concrete data about how carinderias can adjust the availability of their supply to meet the increasing demand of the students from TIP. It is a reality that a person can have unlimited wants and needs and it is in the control of the businesses to meet the demand of that person. This study may also give attention to the people who are directly affected by this matter.
