Christ the Redemeer Essay Sample

“It’s like watching the city in Gods eyes”, – a tourist tells me that has just come down. A one in a million experience that you’ll keep forever in your heart. It’s the Brazilian lord that hugs you one’s you step on land. His name is Christ the Redeemer, or as the locals call it, the Corcovado.

One’s you come down from the airplane you turn your gaze to the right and there he is, always with outstretched arms, waiting for you. Where ever you look you can see him. People say that if you don’t go up to the Corcovado you have not really been in Rio de Janeiro.

The sculpture is incredible, because it was the first ever to represent Jesus Christ alive, and not dead as some other statues represent it. It is the only one of its kind and people have tried to imitate it but they always fail, it is just perfect. Ones you see it you can appreciate all its features and really feel you are seeing God. The face has every detail; it is so delicate you can’t stop looking at it. People say that when its time to descend you feel like you are leaving someone behind and that you will miss that look on his face forever.

The statue stands 38 meters tall, weighs 700 short tons and it is located at the peak of the hunchback Corcovado Mountain in the wilderness of the Tijuca forest National Park overlooking the city. It is made of reinforced gray-white concrete and firm, solid soapstone. Although it might not sound durable enough for 77 years it has never need any type of maintenance. Believe it or not, on February 2008 the statue was struck by lightning during a violent electrical storm. The storm caused havoc in Rio, felling trees in several neighbourhoods, but the statue was left unscratched.

This icon has been through a lot of history, hugging the city and never fallen apart. It was built in 1921 by Hector Da Silva Costa, a local, and with the help of Paul Landowski a French sculptor. The statue was first created to remind locals that god is always there for you, but through out years it become so popular that it become one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. What is also incredible of this icon is that at night when you see it you can tell that it is floating, he looks like a guardian angel, always stretching to take care of the city and the world.

Although the statue is extraordinarily built the view you see there you won’t find it in any other place in the world. It’s the combination of places you get to see from there. To your left you have the fascinating football stadium “the Maracana” and the northern districts. Straight ahead in the distance are Niteroi and the snaky bridge and another of Rio’s most see the abstract unique rock of the sugar loaf. To your right is the immense Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the background and further out you have the paradise coast most known by Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Even though it will be crowded with tourists, one you are up there its only you and the magnificent and glorious city at your feet and off course at your back the Christ of Redeemer watching every move you do. It’s a feeling that you won’t get in any other place of the world. It’s almost the sensation of seeing what god perceives.

As all Brazilian say “Americans can take the Eiffel tower, the Coliseum, the statue of liberty or any other place to Las Vegas, but the Corcovado can never be imitated.” I totally agree with them, because the view you see there and the feeling you get of floating in one of the most beautiful, incredible city in the world is just one in a million.
