Parental Involvement – is the level of participation that a parent has in their child’s education and school. Many parents are tremendously involved, often volunteering to help in their child’s classroom, communicating well with their child’s teachers, assisting with homework, and understanding their child’s individual academic strengths and weaknesses. Home-school communication – is among the most important factors in developing strong relationships between teachers and families (Epstein, 1996; Christensen & Sheridan, 2001). Development – means a progression from a simpler or lower to a more advanced, mature, or complex form or stage. It is also defined as the gradual advancement or growth through a series of progressive changes. Development is a process, not a level. It is a path to achieve certain goals.
The support of a parent to academic performance to his child has no fixed amount. But such shall be in proportion to the resources or means of the giver and the necessities of the recipient and this shall be subject to increase or reduction accordingly. In case both parents have the capacity to provide for support, the payment of the same shall be divided between them in proportion to the resources of each (Article 200, 201 and 202, Family Code). In matters involving support, parents shall try to settle their time for their child’s performance. Parental support is consisting of two related factors of parental acceptance and parental sacrifice, the latter reflects the cultural component of parental support. Many studies agree that parental involvement can either promote or retard cognitive (mental) development, and thus also affect student achievement.
Chan (1992) cited Fajardo et al. (1996) who reported that achievement was more influenced by family background and environment than the quality of the school. Students at all levels also have a desire to know more about how home and school can come together to improve the educational process. They want to see parents and teachers come together as partners, working to 11 actively communicates about school activities, homework, and school decisions (Emmanuel, 1995). The presence of the parents plays an important role to the academic performance of their child because it helps the child to strive more in their studies. Their parents give them good outlooks in life. The parents give their good and insightful advices which can really affect the performance of their child in academics.
