Effects of Emotional Influences on Teenagers Essay Sample

A. Introduction
“Emo” also known as “emotional”, is a kind of lifestyle that teenagers adopt nowadays. It shows many manifestations like listening to a very depressing music, hurting oneself physically, “melodramatizing” simple problems, long fringe hairstyle, adapting black and dark clothes. The researchers have seen these manifestations among teenagers especially among students. Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as an inspiration toward the emo subculture, the term “emo” is sometimes stereotyped with wearing tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and in some cases thick, black horn-rimmed glasses. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. Early on, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour.

The title “Nothing Feels Good” is taken from an album by The Promise Ring, an early pioneer of the emo genre. The book explores the evolution of the emo scene from basement concerts in the 1980s to stadium shows today, and how this activities has affected its target group, teenagers. Greenwald defines emo as “a much mocked, maligned, and misunderstood term for melodic, expressive, and confessional punk rock.” In a sense, Greenwald argues, emo defines a generation by putting their feelings to song and bringing their inner thoughts out into the open for all to hear, and be healed by it. Greenwald, (2003)

Many of the teenager students who have this kind of lifestyle are prone to different things especially for those students who are committed to a relationship. Being too sensitive can cause bad effects not just to the physical appearance but also affect ones health. Performance in school may be affected as well by a students’ loss of focus on his/her studies.

In Rogationist College – High School Department, the social life of some students are affected because of these emo influences. More of the students in RCHS have the possibility to adopt the emo influences because of its extreme popularity and of peer pressure. This study wants to know how it affects the social life of students.

This study aims to find out the background of the students as far as their age, gender, social interaction with their family, friends/classmates, teachers and those people around them, and the effects of adopting these emo influences. B. Conceptual Framework

Emo can be a state of mind, appearance, music, etc. He had been talking to a bunch of friends with their own different ideas of being emo. Being an emo is if the world does not pity their existence while at the same time praising them for their ingenious way of silent and violent rage against “the man” they always seem depressed. Pretty good definition and that could probably sum of “emo” as a mental state. Tran, (1990)

The origins of the term ’emo’ are shrouded in mystery but it first came into common practice in 1985. The emotion of a long-distance relationship fading into oblivion in between missed cell phone calls and miscellaneous flirtations. (Greenwald, 2002) Figure 1 Conceptual Paradigm

Figure 1 shows the effects of emo influences to the social life of the students.

Figure 1 shows that adapting of emo influences can affect the life of the students. Some students are adapting these influences because of the experiences they encounter. They can encounter some bad or depressing life experiences which sometimes is hard for them to bear. Because of having this experiences it can affect the social life of students. This study aims to really know how emo influences affect the social life of students of Rogationist College High School Department.

C. Statement of the Problem
This study investigates the effects of emo influences to the social life of freshmen, sophomores and junior students of Rogationist College, SY 2009-2010.
Specifically, the researcher aims to answer these questions:
1. What is the profile of the respondents according to:
1.1. Age?
1.2. Gender?
1.3 Year Level
2. What are the social interaction effects to the following: .
2.1. Family
. 2.2. Friends/Classmates
. 2.3. Teachers
. 2.4. Others
3. What are the effects of adopting these emo influences:

D. Scope and Delimitations
This study aims to investigate on the effects of emo influences in social life of the students of Rogationist College towards their personal life. The subject of the study will be the freshmen, sophomores, junior and senior students. The study will be conducted in Rogationist College Lalaan 2, Silang Cavite.

Since the study is only focusing in the effects of emo influences in social life of students, the researches need to determine how emo influences affect the students’ relationship with their family, with the people in school. The researchers want this study to be successful to prove that this study is important in many aspects.

However, this research will be limited only to the said effects of emo influences and the other aspects in life that are not stated like physical, mental and emotional in the study will not be considered instead it will be a guide for the respondents to fully understand what is the study about.

E. Significance of the Study
Emo is already a part of someone’s daily life today. It is a lifestyle that has the power of controlling and indulging someone in the different kind of things. They investigated this standard of living and they tried to seek out possible solutions to avoid this kind of bad standard of living. In Rogationist College, it is a fact that some students have been adopted this kind of standard of living. In conducting the study, the researchers found out how the Emo influences affects the life of the students socially. This way the researchers may find better solution by conducting a study about the effects of emo influences to the social life of a student. From this study; The researchers hope that the following will benefit: Students. This study can help the students to know the possibilities that those influences will bring. It can also make the students improve their ways to solve their problems especially the most depressing one. Parent. This study can help the parents to give more attention to the things that their son/daughter is doing.

They can also help and guide their child whenever they have problems. School. This study can help the school in implementing rules and regulations that all the students will follow. They can monitor all the students actions and attitudes and calling their attention. Guidance Counselors. This study can help the guidance counselors in helping the students by talking to them personally about their problem. They can also give more attention by monitoring their behavior inside the school. They can also give more effective advice for the students to be guided. Song writers. This study can help the songwriters by composing songs which will not give idea to the students to commit something which will hurt themselves and adopt the messages being heard from the song. Future Researchers. This study can help the future researcher in giving information if they will also conduct this kind of research. F. Definition of Terms

These are the selected words in which the researchers used in this study and were defined and how they are used in the study. Melodramatizing. This term is used to intensify something which is exaggerated. Maligned. This term is used to define something harmful.

Stereotyped. This term is used to define something which is fixed or an oversimplified conception or standardized image of a person. Fad. This term is used to define something that is embraced excitedly for a short time especially by many people. Genre. This term is used in the statement as a kind of artistic musical work. Emo. This is a genre of music which is composed of messages about love and sometimes bitter relationship. Emo Influences. This are the influences which a person inhibits the message of the Emo songs. This is composed of many manifestations that is being explained here in this research. Social Life. This term is referring to the life of a person as an social being. The part of the life of a person that expresses the interaction of a person to another. CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. Conceptual Literature
Stress is an adaptation of the body to cope with psychic demands (e.g. fears, frustrations, pains, grief, job pressure and marital discord) or somatic demands like surgical operations, burns, and loss of blood. Newell, (1979) Stress is one of the factors or causes of being an emotional person. It triggers something inside a person in which their personality or attitude may change permanently or temporarily which affects their social life.

There are eight primary emotions. These are: sadness, fear, surprise, anger, disgust, anticipation, joy, and acceptance. In some cases, emotions are composites of two or more primary emotions. Examples are disappointment which could be a combination of surprise and sadness, and submission which could result from a condition of fear and acceptance. Leal, (1997) This is related to the study because being emo or emotional can be a combination of different emotions like anger, sadness and anticipation. Being emo can be of different set or combination of emotions depending on the person and how they manifest it

As a teenager there is the great desire to be accepted, to be popular and fun to be with. Some may search for a crowd that will accept them socially. The business of the crowd is to be “cool”. To be “cool” implies to drink at weekend parties. For some crowds the pressure to conform is extended to include experimenting with drugs and being sexually active. For other to be “cool” means to fit a prescribed pattern of dress and action, fast driving, easy money, defying parents, and taking risks with alcohol and drugs. These are considered exciting as long as “parents don’t know.” Wojno, (2004) This is somehow related to the study because one of the factors which can cause of a person to become an emo is through peer pressure.

In this statement the teenagers undergo peer pressure if they want to be accepted socially. They are sometimes pressured to be like something to be able to join a crowd. In the study some students became emo through peer pressure Emotions can make a person do many things. A person can modify his character to please a loved one. Sadness can immobilize and render you inefficient. Emotions can even drive you crazy. Some people lose their consciousness as on the case of a woman fainting because of extreme sorrow. People deeply in love may end in suicidal acts. They often hear too of people dying of heart failure because of extreme joy, anger, or sorrow. They can go to the extremes of hurting or killing someone when he is angry or jealous. Their reactions of different emotional situations will reveal about their character and personality. Gazzingan, (2005) This statement is really related to the study because too much emotion can make a person do a lot of different things that can affect the person itself and the others.”

Flicking through the autumn glossy fashion magazines, she had noticed that some of the models did not look very well. Faces are chalky white, eyes and lips are black. People can wear any color they like as long as it’s black, The Emos – short for Emotional regard themselves as a cool. Emos exchange competitive messages on their wrists and how best to display them. Girls’ secondary schools have for some time been concerned about the increase in self harm. Sands, (2006) This statement is related to the study especially how Emos manifest or practice being emo physically. Some students really intend to cut their wrist or they write messages like the name of their love one or sometimes messages. Some students also wear clothes and do the hairstyles

The emo style has been characterized by tight jeans on both males and females, belts, tight T-shirts often proudly displaying a band’s name and Converse Chuck Taylors, among other things. These clothes are often paired with dyed black hair cut diagonally across the face to complete the look. Listening to different kinds of Emo Music which has explicit messages has been characterized as well. The term has also come to describe a state of mind. Many people associate emo with depression, introversion and hypersensitivity. Stienberg, (2007) This statement is related to the study it states the present and currently conditions of emos on how they dress and how they associate to it through their attitude. Listening to Emo kinds of music or songs can also be seen.

B. RESEARCH LITERATURE
Generally, the person under his/her teenage is in the age bracket of 13-19. It is also known as the most critical part of human development for this period wherein the person gradually changes a child to an adult. Undergoing changes, teenagers become vulnerable to problems such as pressure & confusion. Having these problems, depression starts to accompany them. And as teens get seriously depressed, thoughts of suicide come into their mind. Such thoughts affect different aspects of their life. One aspect of it is his/her social behavior.

According to a study made by Jadline Jaffe PH.D., et al, 1904 the following are causes of depression: (1) many depressed teens run away from home or talk about running away. (2) Depression can intensify feelings of ugliness and unworthiness. (3) Depression can cause low energy and concentration difficulties. In teens, this may lead to poor school attendance, a drop in grades, or frustration with social behavior in formerly good student.

This study is somehow related to the researcher’s topic because it widens the possible effects & causes of an emo influence in the life of a person. A person nowadays expresses their feelings through songs. Being depressed can affect ones social behavior and may result to commit negative things C.Justification of the Study

This study wants to know the effects of emo influences in the social life of students. This also wants to find out if those influences have a real effect to the students of Rogationist College. This aims to inform the students to not adapt those influences.

This study will give information to the readers that there are many effects in student’s social life cause by those influences. Even emo music can change student’s way of thinking or will feel the song and lead to hurt others or themselves. This also informs us that being an emo is cause by being depress, stress, from frustration and some rejection. This study reminds the readers that emo influences must not be the reason to change person’s daily routine, to be rebellious, and to be hard-headed. This study is not stopping the readers whatever lifestyle a person wants. Even though others like adapting emo fashion, the researchers never tell the emo fashionistas to throw away their fashion style.

The researchers assure the readers that this study is done with clear procedure and done whole-hearted and without bias. This study contains accurate, genuine, knowledgeable and reliable information for the readers to know what the researchers wrote in the study.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

A. Research Method
The researchers applied the Descriptive research design. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations. Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a situation. Specifically, the researchers used survey forms to determine the number of respondents involved and to determine information they need to get from the respondents. B. Sampling Technique

The respondents of the study were the students of the Rogationist College from 1st year to 4th year level. The respondents were selected using the purposive sampling. The respondents were the students who are adapting this kind of influences. This is necessary to fully determine the dominant attitude of the students towards their social life. C. Research Instrument

The researchers used two research instruments; questionnaires and survey forms which will be distributed to the respondents. The purpose of using these instruments is to collect data, to answer specific problems of the study and to know those who tend to be emo in terms of their fashion style, hairstyle and the genre of music they love to hear. D. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers had gathered data by using questionnaires that were distributed to the respondents and after the questionnaires had been given we will be giving the respondents 3 days to comply. This method was the best method to use in this research because it can give the information that the researchers will need and can be collected at uniform time. After deciding what method to use, the researchers had made a survey form and questionnaires. The researchers had reproduced as many copies as needed and give these papers to their respondents as soon as possible. After the survey forms and questionnaires had been answered, the researchers had gathered all the data needed and analyzed it for them to have the information for their research.
