Introduction of TOPIC

Friendship is something that everyone needs at any time. Friendship keeps us closely interacted with our friends, it keeps you popular, keeps you away from loneliness.

Friendship is an essential part of life to everyone. To me, I interact with my friends closely everyday, we chat, we play around, and we work together on homework. For teenagers like us, we like to interact with friends, with people at our age. Without friends, we won’t be able to do anything. We take care of each other, we tell each other everything, and sometimes they are more important than our parents.

Without a friend, every single one of us is by ourselves, no one cares about us, at the meantime, we don’t care about anyone. When you don’t have a friend you will isolate yourself from other people, you will also isolate the part of your heart that wants friends. Without a friend you won’t need to care about your emotion, you just close down your emotion, and focus on how to earn money and get jobs. But one day in the future, you will breakdown, like Crooks in the book, you have to find a place to relief your feelings that are stored in your body, at this moment you need a friend.

It’s hard for us, people with many friends to think of a society where no one has friends, where people just work, get their money and leave. In the book Of Mice and Men, people really just travel by themselves and keep a distance from other people. But there are two exceptions, George and Lennie, they travel together from place to place, and take care of each other to keep them away from loneliness.

The friendship between George and Lennie is tight, but also a necessary friendship, without the friendship both of them won’t be able to survive or keep themselves sane. In a hard time like that, everyone only focuses on how to earn money, how to survive. Friendship is something that no one cares about. When people know that George and Lennie travel together, all of them are surprised. Not only because of their appearance, it’s because no one these days travel with a friend or partner, no one cares about people around them. The boss even thinks that George wants payoff from the money Lennie gets.

Although George thinks Lennie is stupid, and always make them lose their jobs, but George cares about him, not like a friend but like a father. Like a father, George takes care of him, like a father George helps him t

George warns Lennie to stay out of troubles, like a father George gives him pets to pet, like a father George cares about Lennie. George knows that he needs Lennie to keep him from loneliness, so he had never thought about ditching him, even though, without Lennie, George can live a much better life. But like a father he still wants Lennie to be with him. Fathers will always love their sons. Like what he said in the story “But not us! An’ why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.”(Steinbeck, p14) they got each other to talk to, they got each other to take care of, and they are not as lonely as the other guys that look for jobs from all over the country.

Lennie, like George’s son, he always gets into trouble, and needs George to help him out. Like George’s son, he needs to listen to him, and stay away from troubles, so George will give him rabbits to tend, like a big kid, he likes soft things and doesn’t always understand what’s going on, and what George is talking about. But like a son, he cares about George; he respects George, sometimes even a little afraid of George. Lennie knows that without George he won’t even be able to survive, he knows that it’s him that always get them canned. But I guess he’s too childish to think about things like these. But he knows that George is nice to him, and he forces himself to try not to get into trouble, but usually he can’t. But he cares about George, like a son does, when Crooks supposed George wont come back, he was very angry: ” What you supposin’ for? Ain’t nobody goin’ to suppose no hurt to George.”(Steinbeck, p72).

As a contrast with George and Lennie, Crooks, a black man never wants anyone to go into his room. He sets an invisible wall between him and the rest of the world. He’s like a prisoner, in a world with one person, himself. He never talks to anyone; he never wants anyone to talk to him. He thinks that he’s a black, no one would want to talk to him. So he had his own room, and wanted everyone to keep away from his little room. Although he seems like he doesn’t want anyone to talk to him, but still at the deepest place of his heart, he wants to talk to someone, he wants a friend. He cried in front of Lennie, he told all these things in his heart that no one knows to Lennie, he knows Lennie won’t understand so he won’t go out and blab about it. He just wants to relieve his feelings. Crooks wants a friend as well, everyone needs a friend: ”a guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long he’s with you. I tell ya.”(Steinbeck, p72). Everyone needs a friend, even the people who say they don’t.

To George and Lennie, having a friend with them is really lucky, but their luckiness didn’t last very long. At the end of the book, George shot Lennie at the back of his head. That was one of George’s two choices: let Curley kill Lennie or kill Lennie by himself. Like a father, George thought it’s his responsibility to kill Lennie to payback the life of Curley’s wife Lennie had killed. George ended their friendship and their future by himself, but it’s a responsible decision to both Lennie and him.  Although the book is a tragedy, but friendship is still something that everyone needs in any situation. Without friendship not only Crooks went “nuts”, also old Candy, Curley’s wife. Curley’s wife seems like a trouble to everyone but she just needs someone to talk to, it’s lonely for her to stay in a house with no one but herself inside. Compare to them, although their end was not full of happiness, but George and Lennie’s lives are much more joyful and meaningful.

Discuss Ayckbourn's Presentation of the Three Wives...

'Absent Friends' is a short play written by Alan Ayckbourn in 1974. This play tells of the relationships between three different couples each displaying their own individual problems that occur within their marriage. The six characters meet at Diana and Paul's house for afternoon tea, waiting for an old friend (Colin) to arrive and with the pressures and combine troubles of the marriages, this leads to a very strained atmosphere in which 'the cream' incident arises. After reading and studying the play, I believe that Marge and Gordon have the most stable marriage although we do not meet Gordon in person, only by several telephone conversations. The reason I think this is because they care for each other however Marge is very overprotective towards her hypochondriac husband Gordon, who seems to lie in bed all day and have various accidents with hot water bottles and cough mixture. Marge also refers...

The Appeal Of The Situation Comedy "Friends"

One of the main points of appeal about the situation comedy "Friends" is the characters. The show is largely character driven so the characters are all interesting people whom the audience will wants to see over and over again. An example of this is Chandler, played by Matt Perry. His mother is a glamorous novelist, yet his father is a gay drag artist working in Las Vegas. Chandler hates Thanksgiving, as it was the time when his parents announced that they were going to divorce. He works as a financial analyst, yet much humour has been created from the other friends not understanding what his job is. For instance, in one episode where the friends have a quiz, men against women, and one of the questions asked of the women is "What is Chandlers job?" the women are not able to answer the question correctly. Another character trait that can...
