Introduction of TOPIC

J K Rowling:

Joanne Rowling was born in July 1965 in a small town near Bristol in the UK. She is a true copy of the whole “Rags to Riches story”. Her teen years were terrible. She quotes: “I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life.” She had a difficult home life; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (as of 2012 she is no longer on speaking terms with him).

After studying hard in Paris and moving back to London, Joanne started working as a researcher for Amnesty International.

She married in 1992 to a Portuguese Jorge. They then went on to have their first child together.

The beginning:

From a very young age Joanne had always loved writing. It was in particular for her, a way of escaping her problems at home, with her father and her mother’s illness.

In 1990 J K. Rowling was on a four-hour-delayed train trip from Manchester to London. The idea of the story, started with a boy attending a school of wizardry. She says in an interview: “I really don’t know where the idea came from. It started with Harry, and then all these characters and situations came flooding into my head.”

In December of that year, Rowling’s mother died, after ten years struggling with illness. Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the moment her mother died. She had never told her mother about Harry Potter. Rowling said that the death heavily affected her writing. She introduced much more details about Harry’s loss in the first book, because she knew about how it felt.

Harry Potter:

Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of a wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of who are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Monomyth of Harry Potter

The heroic monomyth (also known as the Hero's Journey) describes the common stages of a hero's journey found in many stories. Joseph Campbell first described the monomyth in 1949 in his book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”. Although the nature of the monomyth may not be appealing to everyone, it is very interesting to those who actually take the time to learn about it and how it applies to stories and movies in today's modern world. Take for example, popular movies, stories, and comics such as the Matrix, Star Wars, the Ender's Game, and the Lord of the Rings. The protagonists in these movies go through the same stages: Departure, Initiation, and Return. This essay will discuss the five stages of monomyth in Harry Potter; ”The Call to Adventure”, “Belly of The Whale”, “Atonement with the Father”, “The Ultimate Boon” and “Freedom to Live”. First of all from the...

Genealogy and Social Class: Prejudice in Harry...

While writing the bestseller Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone J.K. Rowling was struggling on welfare in a coffee shop. Like Rowling, the heros in her novel are social outcasts. Harry is an orphan; Ron comes from poverty; and Hermione comes from a non-wizard family. Harry grows up in the non-magical world, raised by non-magical folk. He is maltreated because he is different, and to an extent an uninvited part of the family. The real world exhibits prejudice due to race, religion, gender and social class on an everyday basis. Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone is set in a fantasy world that is far from the ordinary world readers are used to, however; prejudice is a theme that is dealt with throughout the whole story, much like in real life. In her book, Rowling clearly illustrates how prejudice due to genealogy and social class is often unreasonable and always...

How Harry Potter Changed My Life

Ever since I first began to read, books have always been a major influence in my life. My childhood was full of many memories of reading many wonderful books. I remember spending hours upon hours going from shelf to shelf, looking for new books. The library became almost like a treasure hunt, searching every row and every book before discovering just the right book to read. The most exciting part was when I would come across a new book that I could immerse myself into and imagine all the possible adventures I could have. The library became a safe haven, a place where I could escape the outside world and the troubles it brought, and jump into many great books where happy endings are endless. As I grew up, my yearning and passion for books gradually turned into a lost joy. The excitement I got from going to the library...
