Have a Say Day Essay Sample

Dear listeners, today we saw it as a great opportunity to talk about poverty. I live in Denmark, in a wealthy family, which means that poverty never really been a part of my concerns. If you live in Denmark, no matter how poor you are, it is nothing compared to other countries. A thoughtful quote by Mahatma Gandhi says: “Poverty is the worst form of violence” which means that those people who choose to inflict poverty are the worst criminals in human history and that is true. I throw away food, cloth and even worse opportunities to study and to be educated while other people dream of having my life. It is selfish! We are throwing up food while other people are starving and it makes me furious! I want us to change that. We really need to make a different.

First of all it is about changing our bad habits. We need to change our overconsumption of food, our habits of throwing our old stuff away and how to SAVE. Not only because of them, but particularly because it makes us better persons and improves the world. We cannot do much on our own, but together we can make a change. We are good at disclaiming responsibility, but we need to open our eyes. Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, such as clean water, food, education, clothing and shelter because of the inability to afford them. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country. We can all get money every day. If we have no opportunities to have a job, we can get money from the state and the reason is our taxes. They do not have that option in countries full of poverty like Niger or Nigeria, because they do not pay tax. In that case of matter I think of the Bono, U2s lead singers quote: “Where you live should not decide whether you live or whether you die” and I think he is right. Don’t you?

Do we not have an obligation to our world? To the people who live in it? Are we really so self-satisfied, that we actually do not care? Are we not supposed to be one big family? It is not because I have a lot of prejudice against other people, but I do not want to fight for a better world alone. So what can we do? There are many possibilities. We can send money to children every month through UNICEF. We can go out on chosen Sundays to gather money for the cause. We could also sign up for an organization to be sent to Africa, India or another place influenced by poverty.

So that is what I am going to say. That is mine and my classmates’ message. So here is our question for you – Do you want to be the person who fought for a better world or the person who closed its eyes and just disclaimed its responsibility? I am not trying to change you. We cannot change each other, but we can change ourselves. Help us make a change and OUR world a better place. Thank you for listening.
