Does your state provide a comprehensive database of services and technologies available?
Mississippi offers many different informational databases on the different types of services available to individuals who live in the state. There is a specific division set up for Assistive Technology within the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, this service offers resources to the community about assistance in home and work environments. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality offers information about Mississippi’s quality of healthcare, the positive and negative aspects and shows the information about where they need to better improve services in the state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as the CDC, offers data information collected in a system as well as many other agencies. According to US National Library of Medicine (2015). Many states offer resources that show different data information as well as the website for each agency, along with a small bit of information about the program. They offer resources for things such as advocacy, pro bono attorney’s, assistance with Medicaid forms, and other assistance programs.
There are many other informational resources available as well, however Special Needs Resource Project accumulation for different types of care in the human services area. Although there are many data collection options to view, the ones that are state or government compiled are generally more complete than those done on a smaller scale. How do special needs populations access services in your state? The population of special needs individuals in Mississippi state has many resources available to them, and the ease of access depends on the individual’s ability to function in order to ask for help, or have someone to speak for them. The Special Needs Resource Project is a website that offers many different resources available to people with special needs. It gives contact tempts to document each resource available so that it is all accessible from one location.
Special needs clients can also go down to the local Department of Human Services offices and request assistance with whatever they may need, and if they do not have an advocate one will be found for them so that they are able to get the help they need. Many medical offices also have information about resources available to the public who need assistance due to a disability. Mississippi offers medical transportation, as do all states and if the client is residing in a foster or group home the agency running the live in care facility will have all the resources the individual needs. What additional assistive technology is available that is not currently used in your selected states? What are the challenges to implement the technology? The technologies that are offered in Mississippi include simple things as well as some of the more common items including tablets, applications and software for speech and communication.
There are policies in many states that determine legal obligation to provide certain services to individuals with disabilities. Mississippi did not always have a policy for assistive technology, however currently there is a Assistive Technology Division that Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services can refer their clients to so that they can get the help and resources they may need. These items are beneficial so that individuals are able to contribute to their community and gives them a chance to be able to work when they can. There is home accommodations, job site accommodations, and computer accommodations that can be made depending on the individual’s disability.
I believe that offering up more information to the public would enhance the availability of knowledge to families and individuals with different disabilities. It can be difficult to determine what options are out there so even a flyer to show something new that is being researched is beneficial. Sending out advertising on social media is also a good way to spread the word, almost everybody knows someone who uses some form of social media, spreading the different resources out there to friends and family is a good way to provide that information. With assistive technology available and growing, people who cannot walk are able to walk, use their body parts that they were unable to before the assistive technology. Promoting this is important for people who need help just to live their life as close to normal as possible, just being able to function a percentage would make some of the people so happy, funding for this should be passed everywhere so that disabled individuals can contribute more to their communities instead of being stuck.
