Introduction of TOPIC

Freedom is often taken for granted, misunderstood and sometimes misused by some of us. If we go beyond the limited political meaning of the word and examine it further, freedom means the absence of fear and the right to make choices. Freedom is about ownership, responsibility and self-control. This is how we understand freedom at Indus and this spirit of freedom was celebrated at Indus on the 64th Indian Independence Day. In the words of Swami Yogananda Paramhansa ‘Better than Heaven or Arcadia I love thee, O my India! And thy love I shall give To every brother nation that lives’. the Indian.

The celebration continued with a brief cultural event including a student’s speech outlining the necessity of setting goals and aligning those goals to the vision of a stronger India. The PYP students gave an endearing and heart-warming performance when they sang “nannha munnha rahi hun”. The IICS students struck a chord with the Hindi and Kannada version of “Where the Mind is without Fear” while the ITARI students had the entire hall clapping along with a powerful and soul stirring rendition of the song “Mera Desh , Mera Mulq, Mera yeh Vatan…”. The dance performance by the Senior Indus Students was a sheer visual treat with a kaleidoscope of colors against the pristine white.

The celebration became more meaningful with the Blood Donation Camp set up at school, by the Rotary Wing, Indiranagar. Several parents and teachers eagerly lined up to give the gift of life to someone in need. Overall the celebration encouraged the audience to learn from the past, to be grateful for the present and to work toward a brighter tomorrow. Indeed the most appropriate way to begin the new academic session!

Two narratives of Rowlandson and Jemison

What shapes our viewpoints of other people? I believe that there are many different ways for us to have a viewpoint of something or someone. In the two captivity narratives of Mary Rowlandson and Mary Jemison, some people argue that because both authors are women, they give a unique perspective toward to the Native Indian people. I don’t agree so. In my opinion, I think our points of view in life are more complex than just because of our sex type. As in the two narratives of Rowlandson and Jemison, although both the writers are women, they gave some different perspectives toward the Indian because they met different people, they were at different ages, and they had different experiences. First of all, the types of people we meet can play an important role to our attitude about them. If we are lucky and meet positive people in our lives, our...
