Kenneth O. Preston’s Kind of Leadership Essay Sample

            Kenneth O. Preston” is the “13th Sergeant Major of the Army” (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.). This is not the first time however that he is given the chance to lead; in fact before he reached the aforementioned position, he experienced being a “cavalry scout, tank commander,  and command sergeant major” (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.).

            As a “Sergeant Major of the Army”, his tasks / functions / responsibilities include the following: First of all, the “Army Chief of Staff” seeks for his advice with regards to work (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.). Second, he is responsible when it comes to issues which are related with “Soldier training, as well as, quality of life” (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.). Finally, he attends closely to the soldiers by “observing and speaking to them” as well as communicating with the Soldiers’ families (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.).

Interestingly, “Kenneth O. Preston” had the opportunity to undergo “Basic Training, Basic Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, First Sergeant’s Course, M1/M1A1 Tank Master Gunner Course, Master Fitness Trainer Course, Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, and Armor Advanced Individual Training” (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.).

His excellent performance earned him several “awards and decorations” including the following: “Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Army Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Southwest Asia Service Ribbon, Liberation of Kuwait Ribbon (Kuwait), Kosovo Medal, the NATO Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award” (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.).

Effective Leadership Traits 

            If it is said that “Kenneth O. Preston” is constantly communicating with the soldiers and the soldiers’ families then it means that he possesses one of the most important leadership traits, which is the “mastery of the art of communication” (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). It means that he is familiar with the needs of his subordinates since he is willing to listen and most importantly carrying out with an open mind (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). This gesture of his also shows that he is an approachable person and that he can be trusted (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). Such kind of treatment that he provides to his subordinates motivates them to carry out excellent performance (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). Simply put, “Kenneth O. Preston” is an effective leader because he has “mastered the art of communication” (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.).

            Furthermore, since he is not only concerned with “soldier training” as well as, “quality of life”, it shows that, “he has a vision, an intense focus on outcome and results, a realistic strategy to carry out the vision and the ability to communicate the vision and rally support of others” (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). He not only coaches his subordinates, at the same time, he also directs them to their respective goals (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). In short, “Kenneth O. Preston” is an effective leader because he has “a vision” (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.).

            Moreover, the fact that he takes time to observe all his subordinates, speak to them about their needs, as well as, attends to the concerns of his subordinates’ families, it means that his passion for what he is doing is exceedingly great which is also why the kind of leadership that he possesses is outstanding (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). Since he commits a hundred percent, his subordinates also do so (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.). “Kenneth O. Preston” is an effective leader because he offers a hundred percent of himself, his passion for what he is doing is so great that his subordinates follow his lead wholeheartedly (Sugarman, n.d., n.p.).

Motivations / Attitudes / Key Behaviors   

Kenneth O. Preston’s” motivation is his love for country which is apparent with the way provided service for the United States (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.). He also seems to be extremely patient since he allocates time to observe his subordinates and speak with them, as well as, with their families (US Department of Defense, n.d., n.p.).
