Legalize MDMA Essay Sample
Legalize drugs now. Well one drug to be exact, Ecstasy. Right now 3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) or ecstasy is an illegally made drug (Galvin). Take a look at the facts and see why it should be legal for everyone. The reasons ecstasy should be legalized are ecstasy can make life more interesting, it’s not as dangerous as things already on the market, and with legalization comes regulation. Ecstasy is a stimulant and hallucinogenic drug. This drug gives you a rush of good feelings that last for 6 hours; some would call this a “high.” While on this “high,” ecstasy could make recreational activities more interesting. There could be ecstasy dance classes at local fitness centers. Friends could get together to have a MDMA party instead of Tupperware parties. Grandparents could share the stories of the wild times they had on ecstasy with their grandchildren. This drug is something families could bond over.
Ecstasy also isn’t as dangerous as other things already being sold. There are many more deaths contributed to alcohol and cigarettes than ecstasy. Alcohol alone causes almost 1.8 million deaths a year. Smoking cigarettes causes an estimated 443,000 deaths a year in the United States alone. That’s about one in every five deaths caused by smoking tobacco products. Ecstasy’s death rate is so low it’s not even worth mentioning, but for reference it’s in the teens. Now of course there will be skeptics. One might be thinking what about all the health risks. Ecstasy can cause hyperthermia, a sharp increase in body temperature, which can result in liver, kidney, or cardiovascular system failure or even death (DrugFacts). That is a rarely occurring worst case scenario, and Dr.
Perry Kendall, chief provincial health officer of British Columbia, says that the risks of MDMA are overblown. He also goes on to say that the drug only becomes dangerous when man-made chemicals are introduced. Of course if the government were to legalize this they would have to put limitations on how much you can have and take at one time. It would be just like buying alcohol at your local liquor store. Life could be a little more exciting and interesting with a few ecstasy stories to share with family and friends. Legalizing ecstasy is the way to go. MDMA gives people the chance to take everything life has to offer, in one of the least life-threatening ways possible. So in conclusion pop a molly and start sweating!
