The curious Incident of the dog in the night-time Essay Sample

The impact of lying is a part of everyday life which may get into the way of relationships and interfere with the connecting factors of trust, love, and loyalty. This is thoroughly expressed throughout Mark Haddon book \”The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time\.” Which is a story narrated by a fifteen-year-old boy named Christopher? Who although does not understand emotions, still expresses himself with the use of emoticons to communicate his story within the first few pages. The audience soon realizes that this text will be anything but ordinary.

Christopher\’s commitment to always telling the truth is highlighted throughout the novel. Dialogue of the policeman \’So do you know who killed the dog?\.” allows characterization of Christopher and his simple respond of \’no\’ and that he always tells the truth. Christopher characterization is shown when he announces quite early in the novel that he can\’t tell lies because thinking about things that didn\’t happen makes him feel shaky and scared. Christopher neurodiversity means that he interprets things very literally and that he often thinks of binaries. He sees common idioms and metaphors as lies; this explored multiple times throughout the book. Christopher although admits that he has told white lies, as he states \”a white lie is not a lie at all. It is where you tell the truth, but you do not tell all of the truth.\.” (p. 62) This also explored through his footnotes as he states, \” this is not a metaphor, it is a simile.\.” Mark Haddon\’s exploration of his protagonist allows the audience to identify with their own lives as Christopher does when he tries to inform every one of the correct and most accurate information.

A central point in the novel is the downfall of the relationship between Christopher and his father, in which the interplay between truth, lies, and trust is crucial. Christopher tells the story from the first-person point of view and sees telling the truth as an integral part of loving someone, \” because loving someone is…. telling them the truth\”. When he discovers that his father has lied to him, this contrasts how the audience was initially introduced to Ed Boone, who was characterized as a dedicated father. After revealing that he had killed Wellington, he becomes terrified of him. Due to Christopher\’s rigid systems of thought, the fact that he can no longer trust his father because he has lied to him symbolizes to Christopher that means nothing is specific any longer and he flees in terror. Haddon\’s portrayal of Ed and Christopher\’s relationship allows him to represent exciting ideas about relationships, lies and how it involves a secure form of trust and honesty.

Christopher has an abundance of relationships that is followed throughout the novel. Christopher uses footnotes to foreshadow his relationship with his father. Helping Christopher grow as an individual, expressing the bildungsroman genre of the book, \”most murders are committed by someone who is known to the victim.\.” Which is ironic because Christopher finds out in the end that his dad killed Wellington, \”I killed Wellington, Christopher,.\.” Christopher\’s relationship with his father is a bond built on trust and honesty, and when that was lost when his father had lied to him, it did not come to mind that he had done it protect him. Christopher thinks mainly in binary\’s in which his dad did something terrible and that means he is a wrong person. Mark Haddon\’s exploration of Christopher and his dad acts as a bildungsroman in the novel. It expresses how characteristics such as love, and trust also is what makes up a relationship.

Christopher has a stable and personal relationship with animals throughout the novel. In the very beginning, Christopher says \”I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking.\.” This is showing the audience a bit of Christopher\’s characterization and how he can understand them because \” it has four moods. Happy, sad, cross and concentrating.\.” Christopher\’s dad takes Christopher to apologize in a different setting, the Twycross Zoo. As he understands that Christopher will find the environment comforting. Christopher often relates and mentions animal\’s multiple times as he understands them and their emotions. In the extract, for example, he uses dialogue to describe a simile when he is talking about, \”two tiny mice hiding in his nostrils\” (the inspector.) Animals also provide Christopher with the companionship in which he doesn\’t find in other people, particularly Toby, Christopher\’s pet rat. Mark Haddon has made a personal connection with Christopher and animals which is a common factor within the audience allowing them to connect with Christopher individually.

Mark Haddon uses his protagonist, Christopher in the novel \’curious incident of the dog in the night time\’ to allow the audience to understand the significance of relationships and lies and how they are combined with other characteristics.
