Introduction of TOPIC

Media plays a significant role and known as the most formidable means of communication in our lives in 21st century. Media images contribute to the socialization of young people across a board range of areas, particularly those in which the viewer has relatively limited real-world experience (Huston et al., 1992). Nowadays, most of the people will get their information through the mass media that they can get if easily which are from the internet, electronic devises, for an example television and mobile phones, books and magazines or newspaper. With all of these mass media, we could know what is happening around the whole world. None of the people would deny that the fact of the power of the medias have totally influenced our lifestyle, approach and conduct, awareness and so on. Nowadays, youth between ages 15 to 20 are more likely attached to the mass media especially the internet and the electronic devices. During 80’s and 90’s, youth had totally no idea with the internet world and they only get the knowledge from the books or newspaper.

In addition, youth that live in 21st century are also more likely attached to watching television. Conservative estimates are that children watch nearly 3.5 hours of television per day (Barbour & Scully, 2008). Children are influenced by media by observing, imitating, and making behaviors their own (Clark, 2011). Parents, educators and health care professional should fully focus towards the medias effect on youth because it has gradually enhance as new and more intricate of media have been developed. However, there are several serious media negative influences had influenced the youth.

The youth in 21st century will have the ability to learn how to use an electronic devices in a short period of time such as television. Television can be used for educational purposes in an effective manner (Lad, 2011). Nowadays, programs that television provided are more trend to educational for enhance the learning skills of all the children and youth but except the educational programs, most of the programs had bring a major negative influence to the youth such as youth are more consciousness about their body image. What is body image? Body image defined as a person’s realization, conception and feeling about their own body regardless of he or she. In 2003, Ricciardelli and McCabe reported parents, peers, and media take part in shaping body image and body changes for both girls and boys. (Hammond, 2005). Girl in 21st century are more conscious about their weight on younger age.In a survey conducted by the Teen People Magazine, 27% of the girls pressured by the media that made them think that they must have a perfect body. Because of that, they will follow the artist or model’s fashion that appear on the television programs or advertisement.

A 1996 poll conducted by Saatchi and Saatchi discover that advertisement that shown on television made women feel unattractive and old. By the time a youth is 17 years old, they have already received more than 250,000 ads information through the media. Most of the women that can be seen often in the media, especially models and actresses are badly underweight and among them they also have people that are facing the anorexia problems. Underweight means that a human’s weigh that are under a healthy body weight that will endanger their body health. A person that is underweight might have a problem with their own body genetics, pressure and anorexia. Anorexia is more like self-starvation-becoming so obsessed with losing weight and dieting that you ignore your body’s hunger signals (Watson, 2007). Besides, some extraordinary community pressure to be thin might develop anorexia to a person. An anorexia patient will feel disgust when they saw foods or think about eating, therefore anorexia might also cause a person become a victim of underweight person.

Anorexia is serious threatening illness that will cause a person die on it because their body do not absorb a certain amount of nutrient, therefore they will lack of nutrient and it is the major reason that an anorexia patient will die. Not only girls are more conscious about their body image in 21st century, but also boys start conscious about their body image in these recent years. The main character in the television programs or ads that have a well-built body have affected the cogitation of a boys that they must actually have the same body shape with the artist. Therefore, the boys are becoming more untrustworthy about their physical figure. They think that the body shape of the artist is the most criterion shape, so they will start compel themselves to increa

using drug such as steroid when training because steroid might help them to gain muscles and more stamina. However, overdose of steroid might lead to liver damage, trembling muscles and anxiety, so they must listen to the coach or gym teacher when training. For instance, regardless of boys or girls must have the proper thought about their body image.

By the onset of adolescence, most young people develop interest in learning about sexual matters, although they tend to lack much direct experience in this realm (Hyde &Delameter, 1997). Thus, the media had provided a huge learning chance for puberty to observe sexual norms and conduct. According to Brown, Childers, &Waszak (1990) there are research that represent that puberty will gain sexual scripts and norms just from media. With as many as one in five teenagers reporting that television is their most important source of sexual information (Brown & Steele, 1995). Youth in 21st century are able to gain resources about sexual norms on the internet. Compare with the youth that live in 20th century, they would not gain that much information or resources about sexual norms. During that 20th century, most of the sexual topic restricted or accused as a sensitive topic. Therefore, the media would not broadcast or post any news, article, journal that are related to this sensitive issues.

Differ from now, media are free to broadcast some television programs that are discussing about this sensitive topic. The thought of mankind in this century had changed, they think that it is normal to let the youth or children enter the world of sexual norms. Adolescents favorite’s television programs or shows normally talk about sex and sexual behaviors. There are many movies that contain sexuality scene had lead the youth curious about what is going on and the curiosity of it are driving the youth get to the bottom of the true meaning of sex. Young teens that are age around 13 to 15 ranked media as a top source of getting sexuality information. They got the ideas on how to talk to their partner or friends about sexual issues and they know how was the reaction just by looking on their emotion or facial expression. Besides, pornography is easily found in the internet. Youth that are consider as a professional in technology, will easily find pornography and spread them among their friends. That’s how they have the sources about pornography and they might involve crime of illegal downloading from the website.

Television may be the one of the influenced social interaction in the life of adolescents. However, adolescents might think that television act as a special window that just learning about themselves and the others as sexual beings. In fact, adolescent may attracted to this type of television programs because of their intimate remuneration of sexuality topics. Television placed sexual content as a powerful focal point of all programs, it give a disappointment that most of the programs ignore the sexual risk and duty concerns. In 21st century, the rates of youth committing crime raised compare with youth in 20th century before media and public attention focus on this issue. According to Zimring (1981) during the teen years, we trait by what has long been called group offending. No matter what crime had teen commit, they usually not committing the offense alone but as a group. The setting of the offenses exist for the adolescents is to illicit peers as witnesses and collaborator. Youth or teenagers might follow the artist inside the television programs as they are doing stuff that may harm themselves or peoples around them. They might learn the attitudes of overbearing and anti-social conduct. Parents must advise all of the youth that the action in the movie are just for shown but not to follow.

If not, they will think that it is the correct way to learn from the actor and become less sensitive to the violence in the real world. Besides, media may develop a fear of becoming a victim of violence to the youth. In prevalent media, especially in television programs, words of expressing disrespect towards girls and woman are frequently used. Television programs that contain violent images may let the youth think that are real and they might be traumatized by viewing those violent images. Media violence fails to let the audience know the aftermath of the violence often, especially cartoons, toy commercials and some music videos. Not only that, many television programs had send the wrong message to the youth that there are many criminal are unpunished and conflict always involves in winning and losing. As a result, youth may influence by those programs if reverberation for committing violent actions. The appetite of youth for getting more violence action in entertainment and in real life increased, so the movie producer take the advantages about it and keep making movies that are glory and violence to attract the youth to watch those movies.

Therefore, the appetite of youth for violence had become bottomless as there is more glory and violence movies are producing for them. As prevention, government should strictly control all the content of television programs. For an example, government can advise and let the audience know, especially youth and young teens know that those action or behavior are just an visual effect and it is not real. Youth and young teens should not follow and learn from the television programs because most of them are negative influence. Parents also act as an important role in reducing the media negative effect on youth by teaching them differentiate between fantasy and actuality. Besides, parents can accompany youth when watching television so that they can discuss about the violent behavior and images that are depict. After the television programs finished, ask them what will happen if those behavior happen in real life and what is the punishment will be given if they commit the same type of violence acts.

In conclusion, media have brought a lot of negative influence to the youth as stated on top. It will make all the youth thinking to have a nice body shape same as artist or models. They will think that it is the most criterion of body shape. But girls might get underweight or anorexia while having diet to have a great body shape and boys might take overdose of steroid to have a well-built body. Besides, youth might easily get the information about sexual norms and behavior through the internet or television. They got the idea on how to talk with others people about sexual issues or topic and they might have involve in crime of illegal downloading on the website and they might be get in trouble of going to jail. Not only that, youth may learn violence acts or behavior from television programs and they cannot distinguish the trueness of the acts and behavior. Thus, they might become more overbearing and have the problem of anti-social behavior. The appetite of youth for getting more violence action in entertainment and in real life increased and it might lead to the increase of crime rate.

A Culture of Ignorance, Violence and Drug...

For some it takes seeing life in a different perspective to understand that a certain lifestyle is not the one for you, but when you are surrounded by a certain type of culture you can't help but to follow the trend that is set in order to fit in. We are all guilty of trying to follow a certain crowed of people just to fit in, rather it is good or bad. Unfortunately I was sucked into the culture of my childhood neighborhood, which still affects me to this day. Growing up my immigrant parents, who believed in a strong work ethic, instilled the importance of education in my mind. "Without education you're nothing in this world," is a phrase my mother would never let me forget every time she would discipline me after finding out I got in trouble in school. All my parents wanted from me is to...

A History of Violence

The horror on the screen was only matched by the horrifying look on my fellow movie goers' faces. While I am not familiar with David Cronenberg's work watching this one film quickly acclimated me to his extreme methods of capturing reality. Many of the images projected on the screen evoked such a visceral reaction that the emotions of the characters seemed to live vicariously through the audience. What this movie lacked in plot it more than made up for in character development and excellent cinematography. A seemingly quaint story about a small business owner from Indiana turns into a blood curdling expose about violence and spiritual rebirth. Ignoring the opening seen the movie begins with Tom Stall, his wife Sarah and son Jack comforting Tom's daughter who can't sleep without a nightlight. The movie maintains this pace until two criminals try to rob Tom's small-town caf??. At gunpoint Tom disarms...

Repeated Domestic Violence

According to Senior Senator Dianne Feinstein, "Domestic violence causes far more pain than the visible marks of bruises and scars. It is devastating to be abused by someone that you love and think loves you in return. It is estimated that approximately 3 million incidents of domestic violence are reported each year in the United States. " It is because I agree with Senator Feinstein, that domestic violence must be stopped, that I must affirm the resolution. A victim's deliberate use of deadly force is a just response to repeated domestic violence. My value for this round is that of Justice, defined as Retributive Justice. For justice to be served, the criminal must repay his debt to society by enduring a punishment proportional to the crime committed. My criterion for this round is Individual Rights, defined as the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled. Before I...
