Reasons as to Why Children or Young People Should Be Taken Into Care Essay Sample

Bereavement; At some point in our lives we all go through bereavement but an adults ability to cope with loss is much better than that of a child if it was someone close to them. This can lead to the child not being able to concentrate properly in school which would have a negative effect on their schoolwork causing them to fall behind the other children in their class and is quite capable of giving them behavioural problems so much so that the only solution would be for the child in question to be taken into care. Parental illness; A child’s parent could become ill, and as a result they may have to be taken into care as the parent may not be able to cope without outside assistance for a while, giving their parent time to recover, how long the child is in care for would depend on the situation, once the social worker’s believe the parent is able to cope, the child would go back home. Suspected or actual maltreatment;

If it’s been suspected that a child is a victim of maltreatment and further investigation into the matter shows this to be the case, they would be removed from their home and put into care while the situation gets looked into further, when it’s believed to be safe for the child they would go back home. Negligence; If there are suspected signs of negligence the child would be taken away from their parents and put into care while the situation got looked into further, when they believe it’s safe the child would go back home to their parents. Child or young person related reasons

Behavioural problems; Changes in behaviour in a child could lead to stress which could affect their sleep meaning they would be tired in school, it would then effect their ability to learn resulting in them being behind all the other children in the class. The parent might not be able to cope with this so the child would be put into care and get seen to by a counsellor to let out their feelings and learn Phobia how to deal with them. Anxiety; Anxiety is a feeling of fear and worry which could sometimes lead to bedwetting, self-harm, loss of appetite or even an increase in appetite and self-loathing, this is a common problem in children which could be caused from unstable early lives which could have included neglect or abuse, traumatic experiences such as parents splitting up or bereavement. The child would be taken into care to try to deal with their feelings. Phobia; A phobia is a fear of particular situations or things that are not dangerous and which most people do not find troublesome. The best way for people to become over a phobia is to be confronted with whatever makes them fearful- dogs, heights, social situations, spiders or something else- children and young people can become extremely anxious.

Having a serious phobia can lead to feeling worried all the time, being tired, sweating and breathing heavily. A phobia will lead the child to avoid situations in which they know they will be anxious, but this can actually make the phobia worse. If this situation was to become out of hand for the parent leaving them feeling unable to cope with the child, which would mean the child then being taken into care were those specialised in helping children to overcome their phobias would assist and let them go back home when they feel it would be safe for the child. Obsessive compulsive disorder; This is a disorder which can cause children to feel as though they are completely unable to cope with their surroundings and their feelings due to the way their mind controls their thoughts over certain things, this can be something as insignificant as having dirty hands, which for most of us is something which is easily resolved, for someone with ocd however it is a situation which they find unable to resolve no matter how many times they wash their hands, therefore it can control their lives in such a way as they feel totally unable to cope and cannot find a way out.

For parents this can be extremely difficult and frustrating no matter how patient and understanding they try to be and sometimes help from the outside i.e. Social services can be a welcome respite for both child and parent. Criminal Activity; When a child commits an offence it may be serious enough for social services to become involved to such an extent that the child is taken into care as the parents can in some situations lose all control over the child concerned, and for the safety of the child itself care can be the only solution. The reasons for a child becoming involved in criminal activity are various, it can be a case of the child wanting to rebel against the authority of his/her parents, it can be outside influences or peer pressure, but whatever the reasons sometimes the only way to stop a child from getting into more trouble is to take the child into care.
