This paper will make some recommendation for Peachtree Healthcare to solve its IT problems using the case study from Harvard Business Review. Choosing one of four commentator’s opinion from the commentaries, will help distinguish which one will make the most sense for the organization.

The purpose of the Peachtree Healthcare is to make sure that standard in quality, consistency, and continuity of care within the is adhere to at all times to provide efficiency, economy, and respect at the highest levels for patients and staff. Executive Summary

The organization is facing a technological infrastructure problem. The issue that technology innovation is growing rapidly, it is critical that the organization needs to get on-board to implement a system comparable to what is common and standard throughout the healthcare industry. The organization must adopt an IT infrastructure with consideration on both long-term and short-term strategies to improve efficiency. The implementation of new system will allow a better record-keeping of patient’s information, quality assurance, reliability, and stability of system within the entire network of hospitals and physicians following the right processes. Findings

The current system is unreliable that creates panic and deters staffs to perform daily functions posing risk on both the patients and staffs. The CEO witnessing the repetitive problem that many of the staff is facing daily brings a situation of struggle to find and appropriate system to implement. Incompatibility of different legacy systems through acquisition of companies from merging results in IT process inefficiencies. Support and maintenance for the existing system would lead to a more costly system eventually because it will still require for company to change and update the entire system to sustain with the growth of technological innovation. Commentator’s Opinion

The commentator’s opinions differ from what the situation presents meaning comments and opinions aiming to analyze the situation and make recommendation. Although all of the commentator’s opinions may focus on one aspect than the other, it brings out every angle of the situation that the decision-making is more difficult than starting from scratch. The chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, suggests to focus on mission and purpose for the system. In addition, an emphasis to the involvement and collaboration from the CEO, CIO, and CFO in developing and finalizing the concept is critical for achieving its objectives. The importance of identifying the purpose will help in focusing on the purpose starting from well planning of how the system will align with the goals. The recommendation is to avoid experimenting which system would work instead of thorough planning and assessment of a system before implementation. Monte Ford

The senior vice president and CIO at American Airlines, proposes to move gradually to SOA direction. The company does not have to do all of its system at once but replace old system incrementally with SOA-built services to minimize the risk and improve flexibility. The suggestion is to allocate the transformation into a more balance and base to its priority properly to address Peachtree’s needs. The rationalization of considering SOA as a project equates to project never ends focusing on the long term value. The advice to CEO to adhere to CIO’s suggestion is critical in following to adopt SOA and retaining system that still works. Randy Heffner

The vice president at Forrester Research covering technology architecture for companies that relies on computer system considers that SOA’s integrated approach to business design will meet Peachtree Healthcare’s flexibility requirement. The analysis includes the vision of Peachtree’s CIO pertaining to SOA not as a methodology but a product type that sway the attention away from the key perspective on its maturity and the connection to the company’s change management and aspects. Incremental changes will offer improvement initiatives and will provide various openings to make assessment, adjustments, redesigning, and reprioritizing as it progress with the process. John A. The question is the current trend of how medical students are focusing on key functions not running administrative responsibilities working solo. Many doctors are practicing with appointment in a clinical department with the desire to participate in the teaching programs, perform medical research, and care for patients in a big institution. The collaboration with colleagues is different from what Peachtree’s concept veer to community hospitals providing health care as solo valuing independence. The transition may be difficult to implement across the network because of the practice of individual physicians working independently. Findings

The commentators collectively stress out many aspects that Peachtree needs to consider. The difference on opinions from the commentators are dependent on professions and experiences both industry and its own organization. Although commentators have different professions, the strategy is basically depending on how the organization’s current status and plans to reach its goals. The different suggestions and recommendation are all valid and will help Peachtree greatly to weight and figure-out what is the best way to implement a new system for the organization. Each of the opinion and recommendation is narrowing the alternatives to make a concise decision and determine which way best fit the situation that Peachtree is facing currently. Recommendation

After reading and considering the commentator’s opinions and recommendations, George C. Halvorson’s opinion makes the most sense. The opinion focuses on planning before implementing methodologies that even the CEO has questions on. Going back to basics will help the company to establish goals and the purpose of the implementation that is also a project. Factors relevant to success in organization’s project from a study (Belassi & Tukel (1996) and Hyvari (2006) is a list that shows clear goals and objectives atop the rank, a process equates to the basic of any project. Realistic schedule is important as it affects not just the schedule but the cost of the project although acquiring adequate funds on the budget according to the CEO is considering a billion so there is no question on that the ranks is basing on the calculation of mean. The recommendation is going back to the process of project management with consideration of incorporating SOA is the unique part of the recommendation. Conclusion

The recommendation is basically collaborating all of the expert’s opinion because all of the suggestion clearly shows a positive result resulting from each of the company’s own success stories. The trend of organizations focusing on technology and innovation, taking risk on unfamiliar system without a thorough studies and planning is just like taking on a project that initially shows failure. The nature of Peachtree’s business revolves around lives and other important factors that cannot or should not be subject to second-guess. To be successful is to do homework of research and consider what applies to current system and the investment for long-term productivity.
