What Is a Reflective Essay?

The title is self-explanatory. The reflective essay must reveal something. This type of essay is a perfect chance to expose and talk about your insight about a topic. A reflective essay is a type of writing in which you (the author)- cooperate with the audience and explain some moment or experience from your life. This experience examines personal impressions, feelings, and ideas about the event and its overall impact on you. This type of paper enables you to analyze and draw conclusions, make connections between the text and yourself, or text and the world and gives you a chance to understand what you have learned and how can you use the acquired knowledge.

The essay consists of your personal views on the subject and an explanation of your position. The goal of the reflective essay is to relay your own beliefs, attitudes, and observations successfully. As well as, reflection is always personal, and so the style and language used to write reflective essays are correspondingly less formal.

The purpose of writing a reflective essay is a demonstration of the depth and breadth of your thinking. Some of your reflections may digress, contradict each other, or fizzle out, but by the end part of the essay, the reader must feel that philosophical territory has been charted, discovered, and analyzed. The reflective essay should be a window into your interior thinking process at your most honest and self-aware.

In other words, reflective essays take the reader through an experience that led to reflective thought and insight, sparked by some external event that, by the close of the piece, appears differently due to the change in heart that occurred. Reflective essays are based on:

  • A description of an inspiring scene or event;
  • Alternative interpretations of the experience;
  • A meditative pace;
  • Philosophical musings;
  • An explanation of the significance of the experience;
  • A return to the original scene or event, with new wisdom.

How to Choose a Good Reflective Essay Topic?

Reflective essays are assigned on a variety of topics. You may be asked to write about a life-changing experience or a person in your life who has had a big impact on you. An essay on “My Vacation” could also be a reflective essay. Also, reflective essays could include abstract topics that are based on social, political and domestic issues like education, democracy, discipline, friendship, patriotism, love, etc.

To write a reflective essay, select a meaningful event from your life. Before starting to write the reflective essay, go back to some significant memories, and we’re talking about them try to analyze what conclusions you reached as well as why you have reached those conclusions. This is called brainstorming. Choose one event that has a wide meaning to explore in your essay. Narrow down the possible subjects, list and itemize.

When outlining the reflective essay make sure that you are focusing your writing on the actual reflection rather than on the story itself. Remember the purpose of this type of writing is to conclude experience, instead of just talking about a funny story.

The first paragraph of the essay includes a hook sentence or a preview of what you will be writing about. Then throughout the transition sentences, you lead the reader to the thesis statement. The thesis statement explains the purpose of your essay. The body paragraphs’ structure is the best discussed in chronological order. In other words, as you were telling the story, the writing should naturally create a linear storyline. However, it is important to remember that it isn’t just telling a simple story, your main purpose is to reflect. Your writing should be crafted in such a way that allows the audience to make inferences about your thoughts, emotions, and actions while the story is progressing. The best way to do so is to use vivid details that show rather than say. The better picture the reader draws in their head, the clearer your reflection becomes.
