Should cell phones be allowed in school? Essay Sample

I. Introduction
A. Attention-Getting Story
Generally, cell phones are frowned upon at school for certain reasons. They can sometimes cause distractions, which lead to lower grades, and can result in change in behaviors and attitude. Even though cell phones can cause a lot of distractions at school they can be very important. B. Thesis

So why should cell phones be allowed in school? Not only are cell phones an important tool in keeping kids safe, they are also being used in education in helpful, interactive ways. Though it may seem the opposite of what we are led to believe, cell phones actually are helping students be better prepared, and not just in times of danger. There are studies being done that show cell phones being used in ways that are helpful towards learning. C. Preview Statement

Teachers could use cell phones in a variety of ways. They can use it as a stopwatch, photographing experiments done in a lab, synchronizing calendars and timetables, and transferring information between school and home. Phones have many positive side effects on the kids. Kids are more motivated to do their school work, and cell phones can replace other devices, such as calculators, dictionaries, and even textbooks. II. First Important Fact

A. Signpost
There are many good ways in which a student can use a cell phone for educational use. B. Explanation
One good reason about a student having a phone at school is that you can access school material at school, like for example a textbook. Instead of having a class set of a textbook, students can access it on their phones. Schools can save money and purchase less textbooks or any paper copy book. 1. Interesting Detail 1

Students can also do school work on their phones instead of having teachers print out hundreds of copies of an assignment. 2. Interesting Detail 2 Cell phones can also be used as a replacement for calculators and dictionaries.

III. Second Important Fact
A. Signpost
Another good reason cell phones can be properly used in schools is the use of the internet. B. Explanation
If a student is given an assignment that requires answers, they can look it up on the internet with teacher permission. Or if the students missed a day of school, he/she can go online to the teacher’s website and see what they missed and can access a calendar and see what notes and assignments they did not receive. 1. Interesting Detail 1

Since students are already familiar and comfortable using their own technology, they will be faster when it comes looking for answers or doing problems since they already know how to use the device instead of searching for the answer in a book. 2. Interesting Detail 2

Students can also be more organized with their notes and assignments if they save it on their phone since they always have it with them, instead of having papers everywhere. IV. Third Important Fact

A. Signpost
Lastly, students can use their cell phones for communication or in case of an emergency. B. Explanation
If a student has an emergency and has to stay after school for tutorials, and forgot to tell their parents they can text or call their parents during passing period or lunch and inform them. Students can leave their phone on silent or turn it off so it will not go off during class and disturb others. Teachers can use certain applications to be connected with students and parents about school information. 1. Interesting Detail 1

If a student has a huge project due, the teacher can send a message to the parent or child as a reminder to do the assignment. 2. Interesting Detail 2
Or, parents can be up to date with a student’s grade and they can know what they are missing and know what they got on a certain assignment. V. Conclusion

A. Summary
A lot of kids don’t have access to computers, but having a cell phone is an easier, cheaper solution to that problem. Cell phones have become such a part of daily life, and they’ve been used in several ways to be useful, instead of just being communication devices. B. Thesis Question Answered

Banning cell phones from school would not be a good idea because phones are proving that they can be helpful in ways that help students, and not just cause a distraction. Cell phones can also be used for educational purposes in classes and can sometimes be easier to use than a textbook. Banning cell phones from schools can have many effects, which could create a serious problem considering how much students use cell phones in their everyday life. C. Farewell

In conclusion, I think using cell phones in school can benefit students and teachers if used in the right and proper way.
