Should Gay Marriage be Legalized? Essay Sample

Homosexuality is a sexual preference and everyone should be entitled to their own personal preference. Some people believe they are born homosexual, however according to Sigmund Freud’s basic theory of homosexuality, everyone is born bisexual and later become either homosexual or heterosexual as a result of their experiences (Facts about homosexuality and mental health). No matter the sexual preference, just like heterosexuals, homosexuals fall in love and want to get married. Life is all about being happy. Happiness, at one point in life or another, includes finding ones soul mate. In my opinion, everyone hopes to marry their soul mate at least once in their lifetime. Marriage has always been defined as the formal union between a man and a woman. It has been redefined in some dictionaries as two people that love each other making their relationship public and permanent. Notice the gender in the relationship has been removed. In the late 1980s the support for gay marriage was very low. As of 2010, the support for same-sex marriage has increased, and the number for those who oppose same-sex marriage has decreased (Thompson).

My sister and best friend are both lesbians. They are my motivation. When they both came out about their sexual orientation, I didn’t know how to feel. I’ve always been taught that what the Bible says goes, but things have happened that have made me look at equality over religious views. Not everyone is religious, but everyone is born equal. The more I thought about it, the more it came clear to me that in the Bible it states that homosexuality is a sin, but it doesn’t say that supporting equality is a sin. Since then, I have been a same-sex marriage supporter.

Since the 1960’s homosexual activist have been trying to promote the right for gays to marry. It is 2013 and thirteen states have legalized same-sex marriages (Flaherty). Fifty three percent of the American people support same-sex marriages. The first legal same-sex marriage happened in 2004 in the state of Massachusetts. A bill has passed that legal same-sex marriages will be recognized for income tax purposes. (Yip) Every day, this issue is ongoing with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. The ones affected are those that are LGBT, and the family and friends of them.
Because I believe in equality for every person born, I believe that gay marriage should be legalized throughout all states of the United States of America.

Supporting of same-sex marriage is based on equality for everyone. Equality is being treated equal in opportunities and rights. Denying same-sex couples to marry is a violation of human rights. The United States Constitution says that all citizens are created equal. Article I in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states all human beings are born free and equal in the dignity and rights, which means people should be able to marry whomever they choose. Others believe that love isn’t about gender. People who hold this position are people who don’t really worry about what other people are doing with their lives. Marriage is a commitment to spend the rest of one’s lives together; it is about two people who love each other, not what gender they are. Legalizing same sex-marriage doesn’t infringe on anything to do with the marriage of opposite-sex couples. Allowing people of the LGBT community to marry doesn’t hurt anyone; it only goes against their beliefs.

I believe that gay marriage should be legalized in all 50 states of America, despite my religious views, because it is a civil right; it is about equality. I believe that a gay couple should have the right to marry without interference from anyone. When heterosexuals marry they don’t have to ask anyone if it is okay, so homosexuals should be the same way. Homosexuals should have every equal right just as heterosexuals. If same-sex marriage were legalized, the divorce rate would probably go down and adoption rates would go up since same-sex couples cannot procreate.

The most known opposition of same-sex marriage is that it is a sin. People who hold this perspective seem to be religious conservatives. Conservatives define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and view the efforts to redefine marriage as philosophically unacceptable; it is about the government promoting marriage, not religion. According to religion, marriage is also defined as union between a man and a woman, and a way to procreate. Homosexuals cannot procreate which keeps the population down. Religious teachings disapprove of homosexuality. They think it is an abomination, as
well as believing a homosexual will spend eternity in hell. “Marriage has always been based on Christian faith, and is believed to be a relationship between a man and a woman. Gay Marriage goes beyond the establishment clause, and is considered a sin in the Bible.”(Baker) As stated in the King James Version Bible, the book of Leviticus, chapter twenty verse thirteen says: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them”(Lev. 20:13).

Another opposition to same-sex marriage is that kids that are involved in same-sex couples tend to develop psychological, developmental, or social problems. Psychologists argue that having same-sex parents denies any child from having a mother or a father (Stanton). Having married parents, a mother and father help support child development. “Young adults from broken homes in which a parent had had a same-sex relationship reported modestly more psychological and social problems in their current lives than peers from other families that had experienced divorce and other disruptions, a new study has found, stirring bitter debate among partisans on gay marriage.” (Carey) Sixty-nine percent of children of lesbian mothers reported that their family received public assistance, such as welfare, at some point, compared with 17 percent from intact biological families. (Jaslow) Among same-sex couples there are psychiatric problems like attempted suicide, drug use, or possible depression because same-sex marriage is not accepted.

Other opponents do not agree with same-sex marriage because it is a bad influence; it validates and promotes the homosexual lifestyle. If a boy child has same-sex mothers, he grows up with just women teaching him things. Therefore he will think it is okay to be in a relationship with the same sex. According to Freud, because of these experiences, he may end up being homosexual. Children growing up in a same-sex home tend to follow the steps of those who have raised them and influenced them.

Everyone is entitled to their own views, and opinions. Not one person in this world will agree on everything, beliefs will vary. Every day the United States is faced if controversial issues and gay marriage is one that is ongoing. Each and every person has their right of equality, and their right to love whomever they want to love. I cannot say that I agree with homosexuality, but I can say that I believe every person is equal, deserves to be treated equally, and should be able to marry whomever they choose. It is their right to marry whomever they want to marry. Every person has the same rights and freedoms as long as they are not causing harm to others or society.
