Summary and Evaluation of Arguments Made By Creon Essay Sample

“Summary and Evaluation of Arguments Made By Creon” Character assumes that state laws are very valuable for the protection and survival of the country. He thinks that family and divine laws are not as important as the rules established by the king. The person who breaks these rules should be punished. Moreover, a disloyal person should not be treated in the same way as a loyal and enemy of the country should be left unburied for dogs, cats and eagles after the death. He argues polyneices was a traitor to the country because he did not like his acts, but his brother Eteocles was loyal so they should not be treated in the same way.

Creon believes that the enemy of state is still enemy even after the death so he should have no honour. He explained his evidence for supporting this assertion using facts. Creon mentioned the fact that gods do not bless criminals. Evidence is relevant to what the character argues and has adequate information to support his argument. Creon is fair and has no biasing to one side. He is dealing them with justice and on the basis of acts they did in their life. Character is neither emotional nor unfair according to his basic assumptions.

He used ironic and straight forward language for his point of view. The tone of character is serious and consistent. This is a logical and valid argument because Creon is doing justice and punishing the one who is disloyal to the city. Reasonableness dies out due to the harshness of the rule. The second main assertion of the character is about the punishment of the Antigone for denying the Theban rule established by King about the burial of her brother. Creon wanted to punish Antigone for violating the state law and burying her brother. He supported his argument by providing proper proof for it.

He mentioned the fact that this is only Antigone among the citizens who thinks family and divine law are more serious than the rules established by the king. He provided good quality evidence because it is relevant, representative and adequate for his argument. Here, character has some unfair and unbalanced statements too. The tone of Creon is dramatic and serious. He also gave some contradictory statements with the main assertion. The language used is sexist, prejudice and partial as he said, “We must not let people say that a woman beat us” [line 731].

This is not reasonable due to the sexual discrimination and contradictory statements. In conclusion, Creon’s arguments are not convincing because he has bad-temper and discriminates men and women sexually. His rule for not burying the one in the earth who was unfaithful to the city is unreasonable. Moreover, his statements about punishment of Antigone are denying each other. At first he said Antigone should be killed for denying the state laws but his real intention was to show himself supreme. In his pride of being king, he wanted Antigone to obey him.
