Introduction of TOPIC

What is success? Success is something that every person in this world wants in their lives. Success is something that everyone wishes for in their lives. Rich people want success. Poor people want success. People of middle class, people of lower class, and even homeless people, all want success. Success is something that those who have it want more of it, and those who don’t have it crave it. Success is something that people wish for their children or loved ones to have. Success is something that those who don’t have it, or can’t have it wish they could achieve it. What is the definition of success? A simple definition of success would be an accomplishment of a goal. But the definition of success varies. Success could mean one thing to one person and it could mean something very different to another. Everyone wants success in their lives. Success to some people may mean to own a business and have plenty of wealth. Bill Gates is one of the wealthiest men in the world. Due to his wealth, many people consider him as one of the most successful person in the world. Success, to some people may mean to lead a nation, a state, or a government. Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, was considered a successful leader by many people. During his presidency the economy of the United States was a great success. To some people success is it the process of doing a task and receiving a positive result acceptable amongst the community, or is it simply achieving one’s own personal goals? Success to me can mean many things. Although I am not successful in school, that does not necessarily mean I won’t lead a successful life. According to The American Heritage Dictionary success is, “the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted.” Even over the course of history, the meaning of the word hasn’t really changed. In the Webster’s Dictionary from 1828, success is, “the favorable termination of anything attempted. A termination which answers the purpose properly in a good sense.

The word success itself has an interesting background. First used in 1537, the word was derived from Latin. Succeed entered English in the 15th century from the Old French. The meaning of “getting near to something” changed in Latin to “doing well” hence the meaning behind success. Success to me is setting personal goals, and following through with them. Whether you achieve your desired result or not, you have succeeded just by trying. It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust, sweat, and blood.

So the argument should read thus: Having great wealth is a worthy goal because it is a sustaining factor to human existence. ARGUMENT 2: Low grades on a college transcript are a handicap in the job market, so teachers who grade harshly are doing students a disservice. This argument is contradictory in the sense that, it is not harsh grading style by teachers that brings about low...

Jacob Vaark in a Mercy

Although some consider material wealth to represent one’s worth, no financial measure can express the value of personal integrity when an individual encounters moral challenges. In Toni Morrison’s A Mercy, the author explores this concept through the behavior and character of Jacob Vaark, a white farmer trying to make a living in the New World. Initially committed to avoiding slave trade, he involves himself by accepting Florens, a fourteen year-old, from the affluent D’Ortega to repay a debt. This decision begins his spiral from modest sustenance farmer to obsessed, narcissistic landowner who then destroys himself and his legacy. Consumed with building a mansion as a monument to him, Vaark loses his path and his moral clarity and transforms into an amoral consumer just like D’Ortega. His pursuit of material wealth leads to his death and causes great suffering for those he loves. While Vaark justifies building his opulent mansion with...
