Titles and Headlines

Titles and headlines contribute towards making this advertisement effective because they are vivid, bold and particularly striking. The headlines are aimed to capture the readers’ interest. Some of them are underlined, outlined or maybe followed by an exclamation mark, which makes the heading more prominent and makes it seem more exciting drawing the reader’s attention in. Puns and play on words are often used in titles and headlines for example in this case there is a title “from Russia with love” it can make the article seem more appealing and entertaining. With out flamboyant titles that stand out the article is not as likely to get paid as much attention to than one with.

Use of photographs

Photographs and illustration make the article more appealing. In the Balcarras article all the pictures show people working hard, having fun, doing sports activities and just generally being happy. This of course gives a good impression off the school. If a piece of writin

will not grab their attention as easily. Pictures create a view of what they are reading about and give them an over sight of what the article might be about before they even start to read it.

Diagrams and charts

Diagrams and charts help clarify things in a simple way they show facts and figures without difficulty and they make you focus on the point. In this example it shows in a straightforward way that Balcarras grades have improved throughout the years. This will of course invite people, and its more attractive way of presenting information instead of just lines of writing.

Font and Printing

Having different style and colour font helps distinguish certain words than you may want to stand out. If you have a different colour word it really helps to attract someone and draw his or her attention to it. Different style fonts can also have the same effect. It can also make the whole article look more appealing and smart. Different colours brighten up the article and make it look less dreary and repetitive. A page with plain black text could get tedious to read.

Overall design/ setting out

The overall setting of the Balcarras article is very neat. The more academic side of things with all the results is laid out on the front and lots of good quality things about the school making it look more professional. Where as all the colorful more exciting bits are placed on the inside. Having it this way may attract different readers e.g. parents reading this article thinking about taking their children to the school would want to see a more scholastic side to it.

The theory of “teaching to the test”

Standardized testing is one of the controversial subjects in any school, college, or household. They were created to determine a student’s intelligence, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Do these standardized test scores truly asses and inform of us of the performance of a student? One argument of standardized tests is that they are fair and measure the ability of students, and they also make sure schools and educators are held responsible for student performance. Another argument says the tests are not fair. The theory of “teaching to the test,” doesn’t help generate creativity and critical thinkers. Many of these assessments result in unnecessary consequences for students, teachers and schools. Many would argue that a student’s scores on any given standardized test do not reflect a student’s true abilities or achievements. A quote by Albert Einstein sums up many opinions towards standardized testing; “Everybody is a genius. But if you...

Racism - social issues

Racism is something we have all witnessed and perhaps experienced. In “The Kind of Light That Shines on Texas,” Reginald McKnight creates a storyline where the main character, Clint, is living in a predominately white culture and experiences discrimination among many of his white peers. They question him on his characteristics, such as his hair and why/how he combs it. As a result, Clint feels like he should distance himself from his African American classmates. He puts his best effort to always perform well in school, follow all the rules and dress remarkably neat to prove that not all African Americans are the same and that they should view Clint as a person and not as a label. McKnight uses Mrs. Wickham’s actions, dialogue and the student’s responses to symbolize the racism that existed within the school system and how challenging it can be for students of color. Mrs. Wickham’s...

Honors classes in high school

High school is one of the most important parts of an average teen’s academic and social life in the United States. It is where many people find themselves, including discovering what they want, what they're good at, and sometimes even who they are and who they think they’re destined to be. High school can be considered a great experience, however, our high school years are also a time where students struggle most and find themselves facing a lot of stress. Some common causes of stress in a high school student's life are things like academic achievements, parental pressures, and relationships with friends and parents. High academic stress, meaning stress of school and marks, is something very common for high school students. Homework seems to be the one main thing...
