The Castrating Woman Motif in Chekhov’s “Darling”

This paper will argue that the character Olga in Chekhov’s “Darling” embodies the castrating mother/wife image and not the “submissive wife stereotype” as Milla Bayuk argues in her 1977 article[1].Bayuk’s misinterpretation is caused by the ambiguity between the levels of represented and implied meaning in Chekhov’s story. On the surface and as the story begins to unfold, Olga is presented as a kind, compassionate woman...

''The Darling'' by Anton Chekhov

Introduction Because of his experience and practice, Anton Chekhov's style was very compressed and laconic. Chekhov’s short story The Darling is so laconic, so consistently concentrated, and its form is so many-layered, that if the reader wanted to comment on any of them, the comment would be much longer than the main body of the story. In addition, to any fleeting and insignificant detail, taking...

''The Cherry Orchard'' by Anton Chekhov

The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's magnum opus; of the 4 great plays which he has written, this is the one which comes closest to universality as well as to generalizations which embrace all men. The Cherry Orchard is a far less sombre play--it is a laughable, regrettable chaos, it was written, with daring effort, by a dying man. Conceivably it should be deemed something...

Symbolism in Chekhov's "The Lady With The...

I think what I really like about Chekhov is the way he uses words: he does them justice by acknowledging the power they have and the impact they can convey. His pieces feel carefully crafted; every word...
