Briefly describe the difference between intrapersonal and interpersonal approaches. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

The difference is that interpersonal refers to relationships or actions that take place between two or more people while intrapersonal refers to things that go on exclusively within one person. Inter is a prefix meaning between. Similarly, we have interpersonal relations that are between two or more people. Intra is a prefix meaning within. In schools, we sometimes have intramural sports. This means that the sports are within the walls of the school. They are sports played against teams from within the same school. Similarly, we have intrapersonal issues exist only within one person. As a counselor interpersonal approach perspective, we have to identify and understand why a particular situation is happening in the framework. Also developing positive relationship and taking out unhealthier ones. For example if you are a counselor assisting a couple who is going through a divorce the way you handle interpersonal approach is understanding the couple relationship and focus on their social roles. You understand both sides and assist with the relationship.

Furthermore with Interpersonal skills you have to listen and communicate. Some advantages with interpersonal approach counseling a divorce couple are improved relationship, enhanced problem solving skills, and helping to cope in a better way. The disadvantage is once you communicate something bad it cannot go back. According to Goldberg and Goldberg (2013), psychoanalysis during the first part of the twenty century focused on the facet of intrapersonal methodology. This approach to therapy provided treatment to an individual that did not include his or family members or any associations that family members or any other individuals will have in the occurrence of the problem. Psychotherapy were more focused on getting the client to “explore their unconscious fantasy world” (Goldberg and Goldberg, 2013, p. 16)In addition, as a counselor intrapersonal approach perspective helps the couple determines how a person’s see him / herself and it oriented towards others . Some of the advantages of intrapersonal approach are self-awareness, self-management, and self-confidence. Some of the disadvantage are over thinking, misconceptions, and incorrect decisions. In conclusion, interpersonal and intrapersonal are approaches that deal with communication.
