The Five Steps of the Writing Process Essay Sample

There are five steps to the writing process. They are as follows: pre-writing, outlining, rough draft, revising, and editing.

Pre- writing

Pre- writing is the first step of the writing process. Pre-writing has four strategies to writing, using experiences and observations, reading, freewriting, and asking questions. Normally when I am in the first stage I write down the first things that come to my mind about the subject. Remember everything you write down will be used in the final project.

Outlining the structure of ideas

Making an outline of what you are writing will help you stay organized. There are three common methods of organizing writing. They are chronological order, spatial order, and order of importance. Chronological order is a method of organizing items in order according to time. Spatial order is a method of arranging ideas according to appearance or physical characteristics. Order of importance arranges ideas depending on their significance.

Writing a rough draft

There are many ideas to help writing a draft for your assignment. Begin writing the part that you are most knowledgeable about. Writing one paragraph at a time then stopping will help clear your mind for the next one. Taking short breaks will help refresh your mind. Acting responsible for your goals will create successful writing assignments. Keeping your audience in mind while you write will benefit the success.

Revising

Revising a rough draft is examining your written work. It often entails adding, cutting, moving, or changing the information in order to make ideas seem clearer and more interesting to the audience. This will be a perfect time to have a peer read your work and receive feedback.

Editing

Editing a paragraph involves adding or changing words, and fixing any problems in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. When in the editing step think of your peer’s feedback. Remember you do not have to agree with them and do not always have to go with what they say. This is the last step before writing your final draft.
