I clearly remember when I was a only eight years old, It had probably been 3 months since my family and I moved to the US from Peru, when I found my special place a few blocks from my house. I was new to this country, had no idea how to speak the language, nor did I know anything about their culture. I felt so lost and alone for a while. My sister went to a different school since she was older then me. I didn’t have anyone to talk to while a school. Every afternoon when I got home. I liked to take walks around my neighborhood. One sunny afternoon, I came across this hidden pond a few blocks away from my house. I was a kind of creepy old pond. If you ever saw it, you probably would not want to go there. However, it was a sunny afternoon, and I decided to jump over the gate and walk towards the pond.
One thing you have to know is that the reason why it’s a hidden pond, is because, it almost looks like its a small forest when you look at it. It’s surrounded by so many trees. It wasn’t until I walked through the mini forest, that I found this pond. There was a mamma duck and her babies. I remember bringing them bread every time I went there. This place was no important for me and magical because it was where I could clear my head and not have to worry about anyone. I was only 8 when I found this pond. Not a whole lot of 8 year old’s can say that, they want to clear their minds. It wasn’t so much that I had a lot going on.
But mainly that I could be myself and not have to worry about fitting in at school. Or how I was going to try and find friends when I can’t even speak the same language as them. Every time I came to this pond I sat on this really old log. The log was close to the water, and that’s where I sat for a couple hours and looked at my surroundings. I have moved far from this pond. The times that I go back, which are rarely. I feel like i’m eight and have no worries but to sit there and enjoy the birds chirping and the smell of the trees and fresh air. I don’t go there as much as I would love to, but, i’m glad to have found a place I can call my own and enjoy being there.
