The Meeting That Changed My Life Essay Sample
First, I must tell you that I had a sister named Cindy. When we were young, people thought we were twins. She was 13 months older then me. About 23 years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer. They gave her 8 months to 5 years to live. She said she was going to prove them wrong and live longer. Well, she did exceed the 5 years by about 6 months. She passed away in October of 1995, at the age of 34. I still miss her and when I heard about a medium from Stroudsburg, who knew things that no one else would know, I called and made arrangements for her to come to my house. Mary Sbat said she didn’t want to know anything about me, except my first name, or who I wanted to contact. I never told her that it was my sister that I wanted her to talk to. I was told some very interesting things and I was surprised by some of them. Mary said that she would be at my house on a Saturday about 2:00pm.
She arrived about 1:15pm. She wanted to give herself some extra time since she was never in this area before. For the meeting, she asked that I have a picture of the person and something metal that belonged to that person. The picture I picked was the last picture that we had taken of Cindy. I found her knitting needles and put them on the kitchen table. Once again, Mary told me not to tell her anything. We sat at the table, Mary picked up the white needles, and looked at the picture. After a short time, Mary began to tell me the things that Cindy wanted me to know. Mary said that Cindy wanted to let me know that her legs felt fine. Cindy had a walking disorder since she was 17 years old. Her walking was very unsteady, Cindy wanted me to know
that she has no trouble walking anymore. She also let Mary know that she had no more pain from the cancer. When she passed away, she had lesions on her brain and had a lot of pain. Cindy also wanted to let me know she is still 34. She laughs because she knows that I say that I’m 29, plus shipping and handling. A couple of years before being diagnosed with cancer, Cindy found out she was pregnant. Her husband told her he didn’t want any rugrats and told her to have an abortion. No one knows this but my immediate family, my parents and oldest sister. Cindy wanted to let me know that the baby is with her and it is a girl. Cindy also wanted to know if I was happy with my job and my life. I told her no and Mary said that Cindy said it was time for me to go to college and get a degree. I was to think about what I wanted to do and get my degree. So I decided to enroll at LCCC.
Then Mary said that Cindy was happy that I was wearing some of her jewelry. Mary said that Cindy talked about a bracelet. I thought about it and said I didn’t have any of her bracelets. Mary told me that Cindy was laughing at me for saving the hospital bracelet that I saved from my surgery that I had the year before. That was my first surgery I had in my 48 years and I wanted a momento from it. Cindy also let me know that a distant cousin’s wife, Cathy, fits right into our family. Cindy had never met Cathy. Cathy is now the organist at my Church, so I get to talk with her every Sunday. Cathy volunteered to take me for my surgery that day. I told Cathy that Cindy likes her and Cathy said she never met Cindy. She’s glad that Cindy approves of her. Cathy had tears in her eyes when she said this. Cindy also let Mary know that she is honored that I decided to grow my hair long in memory of her. But if I want to cut it, it’s ok with her. She had long brownish hair before she lost it all to the treatments that she had. She always wanted to be known as the teacher with the long hair. Cindy let Mary know that she enjoys our talks at night. Some nights when I’m in bed, I talk to Cindy and tell her about my day. Cindy understands that I have
a lot to take care of right now. She decided to hang around and be here for me and help if she can. Maybe she’s the reason that Dad didn’t get hurt real bad the other Saturday. He was walking to my van in the parking lot at the grocery store. He was in the blue lined area for handicapped parking , when a lady hit him with her vehicle. She hit his upper left arm with her driver’s side mirror. It pulled the mirror off her car. I took Dad home and had him put ice on it numerous times. It didn’t even turn black and blue and it didn’t even hurt him. We have a guardian angel. Mary talked with me for about 2 1/2 hours.
During that time I was laughing and crying. It made me feel good to know that Cindy is feeling no pain and moving around with no problems. I’m very happy to know that I have another niece and that they are together. I’m happy that Cindy “kicked” me in the butt to go to college and get my degree. I’m thrilled to know that she is hanging around and helping when she can. I am glad that she is listening to me when I talk to her at night. This meeting made me feel good to be able to talk with my sister one more time and get her advice.
