Abortion is a growing debate in the United States. There are two clearly defined sides to abortion you are either pro-life which is against it or pro-choice which is for it. As with any issue there are pros and cons to both sides of the issue. We are going to discuss arguments that support both pro-life and pro-choice. We will begin with pro-life and finishing up with the pro-choice side of the issue.
Life begins at conception, therefore abortion is the same as murder because it is the act of taking another humans life (womensissues.about.com). Just because a baby cannot survive without the mother does not make it right to kill it; the baby has a heartbeat which still makes it a living being. Even after a baby is born, he or she is not able to exist independent of the mother or someone to meet the basic needs of food, shelter, and protection from the many dangers of living outside the womb. Dependence on another is not a reason to kill ones who are helpless. No civilized society allows one human to intentionally harm or take the life of another human without receiving punishment, and abortion is no different.
Adoption is a possible alternative to abortion and achieves the same result. There are 1.5 million American families wanting to adopt a child, therefore there is no such thing as an unwanted child (balancedpolitics.org).
Having an abortion can result in medical complications later in life. The risk of ectopic pregnancies doubles and the chance of having a miscarriage and pelvic inflammatory disease also increase (abortion.procon.org). There will not only be serious harmful and long lasting physical consequences but emotional, psychological, and spiritual consequences as well. With doing very little research anyone could see that there are obvious medical problems that come out of having an abortion.
In the instance a woman is raped or incest occurs, there is proper medical care that can ensure the woman will not get pregnant. Rape is a horrible crime that leaves women in a state of mental, physical, and emotional instability. A woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape less than one percent of the time, but when she does become pregnant abortion will not take away the trauma, pain, or nightmares it will just add to them. Two wrongs do not make a right!
Abortion should not be used as a form of contraception. There are few abortions that are performed because a woman has been a victim of rape or incest or because a pregnancy would endanger her life, or because she expects to have a handicapped or deformed newborn. Most abortions are performed because a man and woman who do not want to have a baby are having sexual intercourse and facing pregnancies they did not want or plan for, because their contraception failed or they failed to use contraception, so they resort to abortion as a backup. If two people are responsible enough to engage in sexual intercourse they need to take responsibility for the possible outcomes of their actions.
Some women demand complete control of their body, control should include preventing the risk of unwanted pregnancy through the responsible use of contraception, and if that is not possible through abstinence. Although, the baby in the womb is not “her body” it is a separate human life that is protected by God’s law and the constitution of the United States. Not only does our government have the right but also has the duty to prevent murder of helpless innocent babies in the womb. The Declaration of Independence states that, “That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”(abortion.procon.org). Clearly abortions are violating the rights of “Life”. We are giving these unborn fetuses no chance at life.
Many Americans that pay taxes are against having an abortion. Therefore it is morally wrong to use tax dollars to fund abortion. Just because rich women have the money to pay for killing their babies, does not in any way make it right for us tax payers to pay for poor women the means to kill their babies (wholeworldinhishands.com). Monetary corruption is clearly taking place in the abortion industry. The abortion industry makes an estimated $831 million annually (abortion.procon.org). Abortion entrepreneurs are more interested in making money than they are helping their clients. Those who choose to have abortions are often minors or young women who do not have enough life experience to fully understand what they are doing (womensissues.about.com). Many of these have lifelong regrets after having the abortion. There are a large amount of organizations that are willing, ready, and able to provide assistance to young mothers and their baby. There is also adoption always available. Choosing to give the baby up for adoption, allows life for the baby. The parent might still feel a sadness, but will have the reassurance their baby was given life and a chance of happiness. NO chances are given with abortion!
Abortion frequently causes intense psychological pain and stress. When you have an abortion it is something you have to life with for the rest of your life, it is not just something you can forget happened and more on with your life. There will always be constant reminders and things that make you think of what you did. In a study of post-abortion patients only 8 weeks after their abortion, researchers found that 44% complained of nervous disorders, 36% had experienced sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine (abortionfacts.com) Regret and guilt often leads to suicide by these mothers. The Southern Medical Journal published alarming statistics. 173,000 American women found that women who aborted were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term (abortion.procon.org).
As with almost every debate, there are two sides to an issue. We will now discuss the side of pro-choice. Almost all abortions occur in the first trimester, when a fetus cannot exist independently without the mother. The baby is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health and cannot be regarded as a separate entity because it cannot exist outside her womb (womensissues.about.com). If the fetus is dependent on the mother’s body, it cannot be considered a living being. No baby has ever survived being born prematurely before the first trimester.
Surgical abortion is safe! It is one of the safest types of medical procedures. Complications from having a first-trimester abortion are considerably less frequent and less serious than those associated with giving birth (prochoice.org). These women are actually taking less physical risks by having the abortion that going through the birthing process.
The concept of personhood is different from the concept of human life. Human life begins when conception occurs, but fertilized eggs are used for in vitro fertilization are also human lives and those not implanted are regularly thrown away (womensissues.about.com). So if this is not murder then how is abortion murder? Every fertilized egg cannot and should not be considered murdered if it does not reach full term!
Adoption is not an alternative to abortion, because it remains the woman’s choice whether or not to give her baby up for adoption. Statistics show that very few women who give birth choose to give up their babies (womensissues.about.com). Less than three percent of white unmarried women and less than two percent of black unmarried women actually give their babies up (womensissues.about.com).
In the instance of rape or incest, forcing a woman that is made pregnant by such a violent act would cause further psychological harm to the victim. Often a woman is too afraid to speak up or is unaware she is pregnant. The morning after pill is ineffective in these situations because it is too late to take it. Forcing the woman to bear the added responsibility of the child she conceived through the unfortunate act would only add to her mental stress (buzzle.com).
Abortion is not used as a form of contraception. A woman can become pregnant even with responsible use of contraceptive. Only eight percent of women who have abortions were not using any form of contraceptive, and thatis more because of an individual’s carelessness rather than the availability of abortion (buzzle.com).
The ability of a woman to have control of her body is critical to her civil rights. You can’t take away women’s reproductive choice. A woman’s right to choose abortion is a “fundamental right” recognized by the United States Supreme Court in the Jan. 22, 1973 case if Roe vs. Wade (abortion.procon.org). If the government were allowed to force a woman to continue a pregnancy, then what about forcing a woman to use contraception? Should the government tell a woman when and if she is qualified to get pregnant? The women are in control of their body. They have the right to choose if they are up to the mental and physical task of carrying and raising a child (womensmed.com).
Taxpayer dollars are used to enable poor women the ability to access the same medical services as the rich women receive, and abortion is one of these services. Each tax dollar spent on contraceptive services saves an average of $3.00 in Medicaid costs for pregnancy related health care. Without these services, federal and state Medicaid expenditures would increase by 1.2 billion dollars a year (web.mit.edu). Funding abortion is not any different from funding a war in the Middle East. For the ones who disagree with it, the place to speak up is in the voting booth.
Teenagers who become mothers don’t have as good prospects for the future as the ones who are not mothers. They are much more likely to quit school, receive inadequate prenatal care, and rely on public assistance to raise a child, develop health problems, or end up divorced. With that being said, abortion is a better option. Just like any other situation, abortion creates stress. The American Psychological Association found that stress was greatest before having an abortion and that there was no evidence of post-abortion syndrome (womensissues.about.com).
Becoming a mother must never be a punishment for having sexual intercourse. Everyone makes mistakes. Making one simple mistake should never cause someone to be punished with a baby (balancedpolitics.com). A baby should not come into this world unwanted. An estimated forty nine percent of all pregnancies are unintended ((balancedpolitics.com). Having a baby is an important lifelong decision that requires responsible consideration, preparation, and planning.
After discussing arguments that support both pro-life and pro-choice you can see how a person would simply have a view of either pro-life or pro-choice. Difficult issues are faced such as the fetus, determining life, defining murder, women’s rights, the government’s role, and the long term effects of abortion. There are many valid points for both sides, it all comes down to the person’s beliefs, knowledge, and personal experience to formulate an opinion on the matter. No matter what side you ultimately end up taking, one should read the facts and validate their resources before making their final decision.
