Introduction of TOPIC

Have you ever wondered how reality is so much more different than TV or fiction. It depicts life as we know it in the real world, cruel and unjust. And this is exactly the kind of writing from most of the eighteenth century, where life is portrayed from the lower class’ point of view in order to attain a social reform. In the short story Two Friends, Guy de Maupassant describes the harshness and reality of the Franco Prussian War, and its effect on two Parisians who love fishing. This story is a true example of Realism writing because of the extended detail and the unjust reality of war, that Guy de Maupassant is depicting in order to make his point about true reality.

The story starts out in Paris, surrounded and cut off from its supplies, the citizens are trying their best to stay alive. Food and supplies are scarce and M. Morissot, a watchmaker, is trying to make the best of the situation. He is a man of lower class, hungry and helpless it describe

a great example of realism writing because the author confronts a harsh reality of life in Paris during the blockade, especially through the eyes of a lower class citizen.

The author also tries to portray life as accurately as possible. Before the start of the story, the reader is introduced into the current situation with a short paragraph of historical context, and lots of detail about the Franco-Prussian War. This is an example of documentation of historical background, which is a part of realism writing. One can also infer from the extended use of detail that this story is an example of realism writing. The two gentlemen’s fishing trip is portrayed with meticulous detail, especially when the cannons start to fire. The author states; “”¦and time after time the mountain belched forth death-dealing breath, breathed out milky-white vapor which rose slowly in the calm sky and formed a cloud above the summit.” (pg.917) The detail is almost endless in this sentence. Because of the specific description, the reader can get a better picture about reality and its true harshness, especially during cannon fire and war.

Two Friends is a great example of realism writing because of its wide description historically as well as socially, and the use of lower class characters that portray the reality and unjust nature of war. When we see war or similar things on TV, their true reality is usually hidden or not depicted, especially in movies where heroes make their moves. Lately though, Hollywood has made some changes in movies such as Saving Pvt. Ryan or Tigerland, in order to reach audiences about these hidden realities. Hopefully the future will bring more of that, not in real life, but only on movie screens.

Assess the Political, Social and Cultural Significance...

The Palace of Versailles, a brainchild of Louis XIV, best exemplifies the great opulence during the reign of France's greatest monarch. Built with this end in mind, the significance of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV is unquestionable. It became a place for Louis to practise the art of government by spectacle and through ritual. Unprecedently grand, Versailles came to embody a form of court and government that would be widely admired and copied. One might wonder why Louis needed such a palace in an insignificant little town like Versailles when he had the splendid Palais Royale in Paris and other magnificent palaces elsewhere in France. The simple answer is the Frondes. As a child the Frondes had a profound impact on Louis. Louis witnessed his mother being humiliated by members of the noblesse d'epee and Mazarin being chased out of the country. This left two major effects on...

Why Has the Parti Socialiste Come to...

The left wing in France since 1945 has never been a unified political force. Instead, it has been a divided and pluralistic political community, accommodating both Communists who take on the mantle of the Jacobin left, and far more liberal groups such as the Green Party. With such diversity within an ideological wing, it has been natural for a strong party representing a particular vein of left wing thought to dominate the bloc. The traditional leader of French left-wing thought in the twentieth century was the Communist party, yet within just twelve years of the formation of the Parti Socialiste in 1969, these inheritors of the Jacobin legacy had been all but sidelined in French government, replaced by the new Socialist party. In this short time, the Parti Socialiste established itself as the dominant political party in the French left, a role that it maintains to this day. Any explanation...

Intolerance Towards Veil : Roots in Racism...

“It is the white man who creates the Negro. But it is the Negro who creates negritude. To the colonialist offensive against the veil, the colonized opposes the cult of the veil”1—Frantz Fanon. " Our attitudes are not racist; they are based in fact. These people are animals, they are not Christians, your blacks are Christian. The Arabs don't live in real houses but in huts, in holes in the ground; they're uncivilized, uneducated, unclean. Listen to their music, watch how they dance; they have a natural (or was it unnatural) rhythm all their own. Your blacks were once slaves, these Arabs have no excuse. This is just how they are; this is the way Koran teaches them to be" 2- Joan Wallach Scott, first encounter with racism in France in 1967, in conversation with French colleagues at the bureau of civil registry. On all accounts of French colonialism and...
