There are several unnatural occurrences that are demonstrated in Romeo and Juliet. These peculiar incidents have led to an impact on some of the characters.
The first unnatural event that I noticed, was how Romeo and Juliet fell in love so quickly. I’ve never experienced or heard of something like that happening. It’s hard to comprehend that they were “in love” when they barely knew each other. They kissed twice, without even knowing the names of who they were kissing. I find it also peculiar how they decided to get married later that night. It’s so strange how their relationship was moving at such a fast pace, when it was solely based on mere appearances and words. They didn’t truly know who they were getting involved with and I think that’s why they were affected. If they had known before that they were family enemies, I think they would’ve been more cautious with who they associated themselves with. I believe they may have been more wise with their actions together. Another example of an occurrence would be how Juliet acted more like a man and Romeo behaved more like a woman. This was shown when Juliet essentially proposed to Romeo. She told Romeo, “If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow (2,2, l 42-43).

Here they are switching roles, as women usually don’t propose to men. So when Juliet took the position of a male, an unnatural occurrence took place. On the other hand, it was also odd how Romeo acted very feminine at times. He always seemed to be more emotional and didn’t act much like a man. Even Friar Lawrence asked Romeo “Art thou a man?” (3,3,l 109). The Friar believed that he appeared to be a man, but his tears were like that of a woman. Romeo was acting like a pitiful girl, that couldn’t do anything but want to give up on life and weep. He didn’t act strong and man up during the difficult situation. I believe Romeo and Juliet’s role switch impacted them significantly. They defied the balance of nature. According to the map of the universe, when the ape of man is holding a compass and standing on the globe, he resembles mankind and knowledge. However when unnatural occurrences take place, like that of Romeo and Juliet, the ape loses his knowledge. The abnormal events cause unbalance in the world. The ape is chained to mother nature and when he sets off a disruption, she is pulled in different directions. The movement causes natural disasters. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet were impacted because their occurrences interfered with nature, which made them doomed for catastrophe.

Something that was also unnatural, was how Juliet defied her parents when they told her that she would be marrying Paris. During that time period, children usually listened to their mother and father. As a result of unnaturally disobeying her parents, Juliet was affected. This is because her parents came from being sweet and loving, into cold and unsympathetic. Her father threatened to kick her out and even told her he wouldn’t care if she died in the streets. Juliet was also impacted because she realized she couldn’t count on her parents anymore to understand her. Therefore, she was forced to act by herself and make her own personal decisions. There are strange incidents that are reflected in Romeo and Juliet. The couple were blinded by love so quickly and that led them to become imprudent. They also defied nature and triggered unbalance in the world, which destined them for misadventure. Juliet additionally disobeyed her parents and was forced to become independent. Unnatural occurrences in this play have definitely taken a toll on the star crossed lovers.
