Why Baseball Is Americas Pastime Essay Sample

Baseball as a sport is considered to be America’s pastime. Nothing beats sitting at your favorite ballpark, with a hot dog smothered with ketchup and mustard in one hand and an ice cold beer in the other hand. This scene is symbolic to the American culture. Baseball has seen its fair share of changes, from the dead ball era, to the expansion era, where we see different races from around the world coming to america to play this great game we know as baseball. Baseball has always been popular in the united states and always will be. The game has been around for 172 years and is just as popular now than it was when it was first introduced in 1839. People argue today that American football, not soccer, is now becoming more of the “American” sport than baseball. Baseball represents more of what america is, does not have a sole purpose of a means for a social gathering of people, and has more integrity than the game of football.

The first baseball game was recorded in 1846 and is credited to Alexander Cartwright’s knickerbockers. The knickerbockers lost to the New York baseball club at the Elysian fields in New Jersey. Then came the establishment of the National association of Base Ball players in 1858 and the world was introduced to the first systematic baseball league. America prides itself on equality, perseverance, and a fair chance for everyone to make it. Baseball today is played by men and women of all ages. even though it has its scandals and woos, it still represents the best that america has to offer.

When i was only 10 years old, there was a girl on my little league team. Not only was she one of the best players on the team, but a role model for the other girls that thought baseball was only a guy sport. This represents the american way, that it doesn’t matter whether or not you are male or female, you still are able to give it a shot. In football, females are looked as cheerleaders, or people to fill the stands to watch the men play. If a women goes out on the football field, she is looked down upon, and in some cases, not even aloud to put pads on. Is this what the American way is?

On the other hand, I will be the first to admit that football is more popular than baseball nowadays. The game is easy to follow, TV friendly, and gives americans a reason to party. And lets face it, we all know Americans love to party. These are all important factors when it comes to “catching the eyes” of American people. Football is a great excuse to have a get together with friends, drink, and BBQ. It almost seems like it doesn’t matter who’s playing as long as someone is having a party every sunday.

If it’s good for TV, it’s going to be popular. But because it is more popular than baseball, doesn’t replace the fact that baseball is still Americas pastime. The game of baseball has in some ways helped keep up the standards of what we stand for. For example, you don’t see people defecting from cuba, a country that doesn’t really like America, to come play football. They defect to play baseball. This shows how the game of baseball has given not only the people of this country, but others as well, an equal chance to make it somewhere. This is what this country is all about.

Lastly, the game of baseball has more integrity than football. Which is also something that americans strive for. The issue of steroids is a great example of how baseball better portrays the american way, making it america’s pastime. When Alex Rodriguez was recently busted for steroids the sports world was in an outrage. How can what is suppose to be the great American sport let this form of cheating into the game. The attention was focused on baseball players and them only. In 2006, the NFL also had a steroid bust. Linebacker Shawne Merriman was suspended for the first four games of the season. Did he have to go in front of the nation to apologize? No. instead he finished third for the defensive player of the year award. In baseball, when a player is caught using steroids, it’s considered a “ shot to the heart” at the integrity of the game. Records have been taken away from players who have been caught using steroids, but in football its a four week vacation with little to no repercussions at the end.

Football is about getting together with friends, having a party, and eating food. Not what it stands for, or how it portrays the american way. Sports fans care about the history of baseball, about the accomplishments that have been achieved, and last but not least what it stands for. And that is why Baseball is still and always will be the American sport and our nation’s pastime.
