We aim to find out just how popular the Yorkshire Dales National Park is and why so many visitors go there in their spare time.
We are also going to conduct some experiments to examine specific problems caused by visitors and to find out just how much pressure is put on the moorland environment prior to visitors going to certain places.
We are also going to look at the general problems of conflicts and congestion that arises from visitor pressure in a small settlement.
We are going to find out the rate of erosion along the footpath
* Sandy glacial till- Easily eroded
* Limestone Rock- Resistant
* Peat- Not resistant
*If the land is low flat- People walk side by side
*If the land is steep- People walk in single file so the ground is eroded much deeper
*Water Flow- erosion control is different on steeper slopes i.e.:- Mini river/Waterfall
*Rocky Ground- Doesn’t get infiltration
The main reasons for the above conditions is that there is an attraction like a pretty waterfall or an oddly shaped rock that attract people to certa Analysis and interpretation 2
The traffic management and pedestrian/traffic count link together because the flow of traffic is one way, going through Hawes it will be more congested because of the high tourist pressure on the town, people want to see this small town because it is in natural condition and not been spoiled by to much by commercialization.
This is what people want to see, but we found out most people stop to stretch there legs from long journeys and Hawes is in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales so it is the perfect place to stop and have a rest before setting off again.
My tax disc data showed the various places people were willing to travel. The main region people would go to the Yorkshire Dales was in fact Leeds and some from Cumbria. in areas of the national park.
We found out that the Yorkshire Dales is popular with Tourists for many reasons but the main one is its fantastic scenery, wildlife and natural beauty. The place is popular with everyone even the locals.
Our other aim was to find out the problems that the Tourists and visitors bring. We found out that the main problem is footpath erosion and congestion in the town. These problems are putting pressure on the local councils and committees to keep the park in an aesthetically pleasing manor for everyone to enjoy.
The objectives we were studying were erosion along the footpath and ground conditions. The landscape was sandy glacial till, limestone rock and peat and we were trying to find out if they eroded easily. The ground did erode fairly easily, we found this out through various experiments such as infiltration rate and width and depth of the path. At most sites the erosion was obvious with it being bare ground and compacted so no water would be absorbed into the ground.
What the effect of the gradient of the land had on people our results show that people on steep slopes are more likely to walk in single file where as on flat land people tend to spread out along the path. These two scenarios cause two types of erosion: –
1. The erosion on steep slopes tends to wear the ground away quicker but the path remains narrow.
2. The erosion across a path tends to erode the path away making it wider but also is a much slower process.
The gradient also has an effect on ground conditions which can cause mini waterfalls and streams to flow do the path which when people walk on it erode the path away even more quickly than before.
This sort of erosion only happens on walks or if there is an attraction to see like an odd shaped rock or a really old tree or where people visit all the time like a river or stream. Description of Data
The data that I have collected is quite interesting: –
The foot path erosion has some bizarre results we found out that the middle of the paths was more eroded than the edges. The erosion count shows how much erosion has taken place per CM. Cubed, this shows how eroded the path really is in more detail I have provided a
Scatter graph to show how badly eroded each site is.
The Vegetation data shows that wild plants mainly grow just on the edge of the path and onwards, and only hard, durable plants like grass grows on the actual path its self.
The infiltration showed promising results we got a wide variety of results but we also made the conclusion that water is absorbed more quickly into the ground just off the side of the path.
The slope angle of the entire path showed that we were getting steeper and steeper by on average 2 degrees at a time.
The width of the path varied it got narrower then expanded rapidly then returned narrow again.
The land use transect showed us a variety of shops from tool shops to a Spar, the land use transect showed us a mixture of shops for tourists and locals to use.
Traffic management map showed us the different strategies the local council uses to keep traffic congestion to a minimum.
The traffic and pedestrian count was to show how busy Hawes is.
The questionnaire was set up to give us different views and ideas from locals and tourists, We got a very wide variety of opinions from people.
My optional task was the reading of tax discs to get a sense of where people who visited came from.
