Death by Scrabble Essay Sample
In this essay, I am going to compare and contrast the character of husband and wife in “Death by Scrabble” and “Unicorn in the Garden” and observe how their characterization plays an important part in the whole story. Characterization is representation of a character or characters on the stage or in writing, especially by imitating or describing actions, gestures, or speeches. Characterization is also the important part of the story. For some story, the characterization is the purpose of the author.
The plot of the 2 stories has similarities. It has a twist in the end of story and the relation of husband and wife is not harmonized. In “Death by Scrabble”, the husband is hate his wife. He’s expecting the wife to be dead by made words in the magic scrabble that would kill her, but the end of the story is changing. The wife tricked the husband. The one who died was the husband because of the wife made the direct word of Death.
In the “Unicorn in the Garden”, just the reverse of “Death by Scrabble”. The wife’s hate his husband and want to get rid the husband. Just after the husband out of the house, she wakes up and gets dresses up then calls the police and psychiatrist. She expecting that the husband is crazy and the psychiatrist would take the husband to the asylum. After the husband get home, he tricked his wife because he so upset when his wife called him a booby. He lies that he don’t say such a word that unicorn is exist. Then the one to be take to the asylum is the wife not the husband.
All the characters had a similarity. They all wicked. They hates their partners. Their marriage is not run smoothly. So, they decided to get rid their partners with such way but in the end, the plan doesn’t run as they want to be.
The husband character in “Death by Scrabble” are a scrabble maniac-“it’s a blistering hot Sunday afternoon and all I can think of to do with my life is to play Scrabble.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1), vengeful-“I hate my wife”,” Some inner poison slowly spreading through my limbs, and when it gets to my fingertips I am going to jump out of my chair, spilling the Scrabble tiles over the floor, and I am going to start hitting her again and again and again.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1 and 2) an active man-“I should be out, doing exercise, spending money, meeting people. ” (“Death by Scrabble”, page 1), imaginary-“If she wasn’t around, I’d be doing something interesting right now. I’d be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I’d be starring in the latest Hollywood blockbuster. I’d be sailing the Vendee Globe on a 60-foot clipper called the New Horizons”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1), likes chewing scrabble tiles-“ I start chewing on my U. It’s a bad habit”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1).
The wife’s character in “Death by Scrabble” are not talkative-“ I don’t think I’ve spoken to anyone except my wife since Thursday morning.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1), a calm person-“She sits back down with a heavy sigh and starts fiddling with her letters again.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 2), ignore the environments-“My wife sleeps all the time. She slept through an argument our next-door neighbors had that resulted in a broken door, a smashed TV and a Teletubby Lala doll with all the stuffing coming out.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 2), also vengeful-“I fall to the floor. My wife just sits there, watching”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 4).
The husband’s character in “Unicorn in the Garden” is liar-“Did you tell your wife you saw a unicorn?” asked the police. “Of course not,” said the husband. “The unicorn is a mythical beast.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”,3rd paragraph), doesn’t like to be called as a booby-“ The man, who never liked the words “booby” and “booby-hatch,” and who liked them even less on a shining morning when there was a unicorn in the garden, thought for a moment.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 1st paragraph), a tricky man-“We’ll see about that,” he said.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 1st paragraph), likes to live without his wife-“So they took her away, cursing and screaming, and shut her up in an institution. The husband lived happily ever after.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 3rd paragraph)
The wife’s character in “Unicorn in the Garden” are wicked-“And as soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could. She was very excited and there was a gloat in her eye. She telephoned the police and she telephoned the psychiatrist; she told them to hurry to her house and bring a strait-jacket.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 2nd paragraph), don’t care about her husband-“She opened one unfriendly eye and looked at him. “The unicorn is a mythical beast,” she said, and turned her back on him.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 1st paragraph), hate her husband-“His wife sat up in bed and looked at him, coldly. “”You are a booby,” she said, “and I am going to have you put in a booby-hatch.”(“Unicorn in the Garden”, 1st paragraph)
The hatred of each other that builds the story of “Death by Scrabble” and “Unicorn in the Garden”. The stories are have more similarity. The one’s who planned to set a trap to their partners is trapped into their own trap and their partners are surely more clever than them. It means that their revenge got into their self.
The hatred could keep the stories to be outguessed. That’s why the characterization of the characters have the important parts because that all of characters hate each other. The writer uses their hates, angers, rages, and hatreds to connect them. If one of them isn’t hate his/her partners, the story might be flat and the trap that has been settled up should be works perfectly. That would make the readers to easily guess the end of the story, so the story wouldn’t attract the readers and they wouldn’t interested in the story.
