Olivia Weston is the temporary house mother at Behala’s Mission School and she has been characterised as a compassionate individual who wants to make a difference to the children’s lives. Olivia’s compassionate nature is revealed primarily through her thoughts and behaviour. Part way through the novel Olivia recounts her trip to Colva Prison with the boys. She begins this section explaining how she “fell in love” with the Behala children and the “eyes looking at me, and the smiles” (p.78). She goes on to share that visiting “the mountains of trash, and the children… is a thing to change your life” (p.78). Olivia’s thoughts immediately position the reader to understand the depth of her affection for the Behala children and her desire to care for them.

Her compassionate nature is further reinforced through her behaviour when she helps the boys visit the prison. In fact, not only does she act as their escort, she p

even though she “gulped when [she] saw the meter” (p.83). Clearly, Olivia does whatever she can to help the boys, despite the fact that they achieve their goals at her expense.

Characterisation via thoughts and behaviour has positioned the reader to view Olivia as a compassionate individual, whose admirable qualities often result in her being manipulated by those she most cares for.

One of the central values promoted in Trash, which strongly aligns with my own belief system, is ‘community’ and an appreciation for the support that communities offer. Valuing one’s community is presented through Raphael and his traumatic experience at the police station. When he returned to Behala the “whole neighbourhood came out” because when “one of their numbers is hurt, everyone feels the wound” (p.79). Raphael is grateful for the community’s care and compassion, and it helps him recover from the incident and continue to solve the Jose Angelico mystery. As a teacher, I constantly experience the benefits of belonging to a strong school community.

At the moment in WA, the state government is cutting funding from public education and teachers will be involved in industrial action. My school’s board has endorsed the teachers’ actions and requested that students and parents get behind us too. I am grateful for their support because we will not be successful if we do not have a united voice, and this speaks to why I value the idea of community. On this occasion, my values align with the values promoted in Trash, but this is not the case when it comes to trust.

First Night in Prison

I'm chilly, hungry and this...place, if you can call it that, is dark. When we were first bought into the prison they had us all strip down in front of each other, it so totally embarrassing, getting completely nude in front of all these strangers, where it felt like all their eyes were boring into each part of my body. I felt each and every one of their eyes were devouring me and consuming my every inch of my soul. I felt so violated, as if I had been raped, robbed of my dignity and privacy with all these strange faces just staring into me with cold steel eyes. At first, before we were actually allowed to change into our prison clothes, we were allowed to have a shower. It was awful, the soap was in a dish surrounded by water and it was brown and encrusted with dirt, I...

Prison Corruption

Corruption is a common occurrence in prisons in this country and around the world. The reason for this is because prison environments provide for the combination of individuals with lost rights and individuals with full power, plus minimal monitoring. This equation produces inevitable corruption. The antidote to corruption is exposition. Corruption happens under the cloak of darkness. Once light is shed on the wrong-doing, a sort of purification process occurs and wrongs are righted. Hence, the first step in a successful plan to purge corruption from prisons would be video tape all actions in prison, and to give full access of operations to reliable media sources. “Reliable media sources” means any media other than the establishment media (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) because the establishment media are beholden to multimillionaire owners and run stories that are only beneficial to their individual agendas. With the aforementioned in mind, the anti-corruption strategy would...

The Private Prison Industry

On the surface, the private prison industry seems like a great idea. Advocates for private prisons argue that the use of these facilities can free up space in poorly funded state prisons, cost less to operate, and still hold the security and safety of inmates and staff at top priority. Unfortunately, that’s not how it usually works out. Large corporations like Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) , are looking to make a profit at the end of the day. They have shareholders just like any other major corporation and have to answer to them and make sure their needs are met before worrying about important issues such as the living conditions for the inmates housed in their facilities. The thought of these private prisons making a profit from criminals housed there is troubling for me given that the United States already has the highest number of people incarcerated in the...
